Up one flight of stars and the first floor living space is an L-shaped open-plan room that has been neatly zoned, with areas for cooking, eating and relaxing.
A rich, dark wall colour in the living room, combined with a large floor rug and rich soft furnishings create a cosy space for relaxing, while an olive green wall marks out the cooking and working space beyond.
Wiser thermostat and valves, Schneider Electric

A smooth orange velvet sofa in the living room offers more than a passing nod to the 1970s but the modern shape brings it firmly up to date. 1970s revival is a key trend to look out for as you tour the house; ‘velvet sofas’, ‘brass’ and ‘houseplants’ were search terms that spiked in popularity on Houzz in 2017, and all have their roots in this bold decade.
Wall paint, Cobalt Night, Dulux. Ultimate two gang socket, in gloss black, Schneider Electric.

Botanicals are a second key trend to keep an eye out for and houseplants take pride of place in every room, bringing life, colour and movement to each space. This large bird of paradise plant makes a beautifully graphic statement in the corner of the living room, the exotic orange flower heads picking up the rust tones of the sofa and armchair.

The kitchen is tucked into the farthest corner of the open-plan living area and the U-shaped layout is hardworking and practical, maximising workspace while allowing those in the kitchen to interact with others sitting in the dining area just beyond.
The charcoal grey kitchen units reflect Houzz users’ appetites for dark kitchens: ‘blue kitchen’ and ‘black kitchen’ were frequent search terms in 2017, but green kitchens were a growing trend on Houzz last year – something we reported on back in January – so the introduction of an olive green wall against the black painted units neatly ties to two trends together.
BeoSound shape, Bang & Olufsen. Sherwood Charcoal kitchen range, pewter knob and pewter cup handles, Apollo slab tech ice white worktop, Lincoln ceramic white undermount kitchen sink, Winnipeg kitchen tap, all Benchmarx Kitchens & Joinery. Ultimate one gang lightswitch, in gloss black, Schneider Electric. Wall colour, Gooseberry Fool, Dulux

A hob set into the peninsula worktop allows those cooking to face outwards into the room, while a couple of bar stools allow the worktop to be transformed into a practical breakfast bar in the mornings or a spot to relax in with a glass of wine in the evenings.
A bank of tall units discreetly houses the Miele appliances and an open shelving unit offers plenty of room to display glassware and crockery.
Microwave combination oven, steam combination oven, oven, built-in fridge-freezer, 2-1 induction hob, built-in wine cooler, dishwasher, robot vacuum cleaner, all Miele. Misty Fjord tiles, Topps Tiles.

A rustic wooden dining table tucks neatly into the area between the kitchen and living space and a softer green wall colour signifies the change of use, creating a bright, fresh area for eating and working.

With more of us living in smaller spaces, multi-function has been a buzzword in interiors in recent times. Though this townhouse is far from petite, the second floor of the Houzz of 2018 showcases the ultimate multi-purpose space – a stylish master bedroom, bathroom and home office in one.
The clever use of an internal metal-framed window combined with a sheer curtain illustrates the possibilities of ‘broken-plan’ living – connected spaces that can be left as one open room or divided into more intimate areas when required.

Large format marble tiles throughout the entire bathroom area create a luxe, spa-like feel and clearly mark the space as a different zone to the connected bedroom.
A rustic table surface-mounted with twin basin is practical as well as stylish, bringing warmth and character to the space.
Roll top bath painted in Palm Night by Dulux, shower mixer in black, basin mixer in black, distressed pine table console, Carlton low level WC suite, wall mounted towel warmer, all Aston Matthews. Serene Chalk Voile curtains on a ceiling mounted track, Hillarys. Arabescato tile and honed black marble splashback, Topps Tiles. Door and wall paint, Blackberry bush, Dulux.

The indulgent bathing space is about far removed from a clinical, all-white space as it’s possible to get and shows how increasingly homeowners want their bathrooms to reflect their personal style. Homeowners are looking for, among other things, a spa-like atmosphere (especially the under-35s), bigger showers and gorgeous bathroom tiles – and this beautiful space ticks all of those boxes.
Plenty of lush green houseplants reference our growing love-affair with botanicals and the dark-green painted bathtub is a beautiful example of the trend for green in interiors.

The bedroom is rich, cosy space that offers a strong dose of ‘hygge’, thanks to a cocooning wall colour, soft floor-length curtains and layer upon layer of plush textiles draped across the bed.
The wall colour behind the bed is Dulux’s colour of the year 2018, Heart Wood, and the entire space has been designed to offer a soothing escape from the pressures of the outside world.
Headphones, Bang & Olufsen. Blue and white checkered 2000t super king bed, headboard in cognac, and Stitch Anthracite bed linen, Hästens.

A slim desk is tucked into the space under the bedroom window allowing the room to be used during the day, and providing a neat solution to the conundrum of finding space for a home office in a family home.

Another trend to look out for in 2018 is ‘modern craft’ and there are some beautiful items dotted throughout the space, including these woven storage baskets and macrame wall hangings. With an emphasis on the story behind the product, these crafted items bring an extra layer of character and personality to the space.

On the top floor a generous sized child’s room has been decorated in a beautiful palette of blush pinks and soft lilacs with contemporary illustrated wallpapers, black-framed prints and soft, tactile rugs.
Everything in this space has been designed to grow with the child, ensuring the room has longevity and won’t feel dated within a year or two.

A reclining chair in woven strips of soft, blush leather (just in view) offers a relaxing spot to perch for children and adults alike, while a graphic black side table adds an unexpected element of contemporary style to the space, making it a place for parents to enjoy spending time as much as children.

A dramatic cluster light makes a feature out of a dark corner, drawing attention to the small table and stool beneath, and marking the space out as a corner for creative play.

On the top floor, the attic has been transformed into a lush cafe with a living wall made from hundreds of individual plants. A distressed-finish wallpaper gives the feel of a gracefully ageing space while woven lampshades again reflect the modern craft trend and bring a playful element to the room.
