Houzz Singapore Contributor. I enjoy writing about interior design, architecture, decor ideas and space-planning. Living in space-starved Singapore, I am particularly interested to see how homeowners tackle storage solutions for small homes and how they maximise their floor space. I believe that with all things, less is more!

Home to a bachelor, this apartment has a special feature that challenges the traditional way of zoning a home. Design firm 0932 Design Consultants proposed a pavilion within the home that would essentially meld the living room and the balcony into an expansive space. This serves to better maximise the use of the space to suit his lifestyle needs. For the resulting permutable, multi-purpose feature, the firm received a Gold award for residential design in the Design Excellence Awards 2015 of the Interior Design Confederation - Singapore (IDCS).

Who lives here: A Singaporean university professor in his 30s
Location: 3-room condominium apartment in the North of Singapore
Size: 1108 sqft; 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
The homeowner favours the light, industrial-style aesthetic, but he also wanted the home to look and feel cosy, say 0932 Design Consultants. As such, raw concrete wall panels were chosen to channel the industrial-style theme, and wooden trellis were incorporated to add warmth to the space, and to balance out the harsh, cold look of concrete.

0932 Design Consultants principals Low Chee Khiang and Roystern Goh say that the pavilion is where the homeowner spends his time on activities such as reading, yoga, dining, and entertaining. The space was designed to accommodate all of these activities that would require various types of furniture and ambience.
The bi-fold glass panel helps to contain the air-conditioned environment, and improves air-circulation in the home when it’s partially opened.

The wooden panel on the right can be pushed – note the barely-there tracks on the ceiling that it glides on – to stay flushed against the facing wall (on the left) to allow for an unobstructed view of the surroundings beyond, while instantly “expanding” and illuminating the livable area with more light.
An unbroken expanse of light-filled space; this is how the area looks when the panel is completely flush with the wall on the left.
The glass-backed pavilion was also designed to be low-maintenance. Access to the glass-backing is easy – just separate it from the wooden slats – and all it needs is a quick wipe down to keep it sparkling clear.

The wooden trellis hides a dining table that folds away when it is not in use. This neat and thoughtful space-saving feature gives the homeowner the flexibility of having a dining table when he’s entertaining guests or keeping it stored when he needs the area for an exercise session.

The dining table sits strategically by the balcony, the homeowner can even enjoy his meal alfresco style if he wanted to!
He also has the option of dining in the kitchen, with the bar stools on one side of the kitchen island.

The light-filled master bedroom is minimally furnished yet practical. The custom-made headboard has small storage slots within to hold magazines and other bedtime essentials.

Open shelving frames the TV that faces the bed. It holds the homeowner’s collection of books, magazines, and other memorabilia. The use of thin metal shelving gives the wall a sleek profile and highlights the items on display.
The initial plan was to combine two rooms so that the study can be contained in the master bedroom. However, as one of the walls could not be knocked down, the wardrobe and the study are now in one bedroom. The result: a more spacious master bedroom and a generous-sized study.
