@goodewyfe: I grew up without air conditioning near Philadelphia. We did have table fans with ceiling fans in the main rooms - living room, library and dining room. I moved to Texas after college. I had an apt but didn't use the air and always left windows open. In my Aunt/Uncle's home, they always had air on and I always wore a sweater or light jacket. When I purchased my first house, it didn't have air. Always kept the jalousie windows opened. When I purchased my first computer in late 1980s, I had to air condition one room because computers at that time didn't last long in the humidity of SE Texas.

Today, I live in a ranch home I built 23 years ago. It has air and heat and every room has ceiling fans . I don't use the air until temps get up well into the 90s. Even then I leave the air set at 82 deg with my fans running. I do work outdoors. I'm very comfortable and my electric bill rarely goes over $120 per month.

I think it's all that one is acclimated to within reason. I have noticed that some people I know who moved from the north to my area need at least a year to acclimate to our weather. Now cold weather - under 45-50 deg F - I don't like so much. LOL

@buster57: Amazon has the Haiku ceiling fans for $738; Home Depot sells same for mid $800s. As usual, shop around.
