We're just about to get the keys on an old, unattractive and unloved bungalow we are buying. We will be moving from a 2 storey to a single storey, so a bit apprehensive. But reading this has really inspired us. Cant wait to get to work on it.

When we moved to the highlands of scotland 7 years ago, from England, to be nearer relatives again, we found a completely different attitude to bungalows. They are not seen as old peoples homes here, but homes for everyone and there are loads of them, more than 2 story buildings, although many are what are termed 1.5 story, as the second floor is in the eaves and built like that (not converted to be like that). Their low height echoes the long houses of scottish highlands from former times, they sit in the landscape and do not dominate it so much, they are better suited to the elements as resist wind and snow and rain better. Of couse there is more land available up here, away from built up areas, so their are bigger plots for sale and the cost of land is cheaper than in the rest of the UK. Unfortunately, the tide is beginning to turn though, as developers see potential for small developments and sqeeze houses into the minimum space, even up here.
