Great article! We looked at recessed lights and had already decided to go with smaller (2 or 3”) vs larger, so it’s good to know we are on the right track. Can you say how many recessed lights per foot you recommend or is it not possible to give general guidance?

Kellie, it is hard to give general guidance because the lumen output and beam spread of each recessed light can be dramatically different. As a rule of thumb, however, I suggest centering a small downlight over every cabinet. This usually comes out to 24-36" apart.

The lights over my island are on a dimmer and, yes, I dim them often when entertaining! Brighter for prep/clean up, but lower for mood during the party.
