How to Use Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2022, Periwinkle Blue
Very Peri is an enchanting purple-blue hybrid chosen to represent courage and creativity. See how to use it in your home
“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,” Pantone executive director Leatrice Eiseman says.
“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone,” she says, “Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
When it comes to home décor, Pantone sees Very Peri evoking a kind of new modernity and injecting a fresh, playful and creative spirit.
It’s an uncommon kitchen colour, so it definitely brings a certain flair and freshness to a space. It works well as an accent colour in an otherwise white kitchen. Consider using it on lower perimeter cabinets or an island, which will give the space a nice infusion of fun colour while retaining a light and airy feel.

Purples and blues are considered calming colours that contribute to feelings of rest and relaxation, making them top choices for a bedroom. A colour similar to Very Peri adorns the walls in this minimalist modern San Francisco bedroom by Levy Art + Architecture, giving it a soft and soothing vibe.
Similarly, periwinkle hues can turn a bathroom into a comforting sanctuary. Just a dash of this alluring colour can transform a bathroom from “meh” to “ahhh”.
This charming traditional Boston bathroom by Leslie Saul & Associates doesn’t necessarily need a colour boost, but I like how the upper accent wall colour brings the eye up, making the ceiling appear higher and the room larger.
Speaking of decorative accessories, if you love Veri Peri, then 2022 will be a good year to pick up furniture and furnishings in this hue. That’s because manufacturers take note of Pantone’s selection and integrate the colour in textiles and upholstery. I think that’s the best thing about these Pantone Color of the Year picks: fans of the chosen shade will easily be able to find interiors pieces in it.
I think periwinkle blue can also work well on the outside of a home. The soft periwinkle on this US home by Merrick Design and Build is accented nicely by the darker purple-blue shutters. It’s colourful, but because a fairly tight palette of colours has been used, it looks harmonious. This could equally work on brick walls.
In a funny coincidence, I recently declared to my husband that we should repaint our front door to match the beautiful spring-blooming purple-blue flowers on a nearby jacaranda tree, a colour reminiscent of Very Peri. I’m certainly on board with heralding in a spirit of courage, creativity and hope for 2022.
