Kitchen Tour: An Inspired Colour Choice for a Cosy, Contemporary Room
A practical layout is complemented by a fun palette and creative elements in this small, family-friendly kitchen
The owners of this Victorian terraced house were keen to make the most of the space in their kitchen and to add their own personality to the room. They contacted Lindsay Anderson of Honest Kitchens, who helped them choose the perfect cabinets and tailor the space to their needs. Once these practicalities were taken care of, it was time to have fun with the design.
“The owner had some great, strong ideas,” Lindsay says. “She wanted a fun, contemporary kitchen with a lot of personality and space to display her own objects.
“It’s quite a small space, so the challenge was fitting all the elements in,” she explains. “The family needed plenty of storage, plus a breakfast bar where the children could sit.”
“The owners didn’t want wall cabinets, as these can feel slightly claustrophobic,” Lindsay says, “so it was important to incorporate as much storage as possible elsewhere.”
As well as cupboards and drawers within the U-shaped workspace, Lindsay suggested a hidden cabinet in the breakfast bar. The panel to the right of the bar stools opens up to reveal a cupboard for the children’s stationery and art materials.

Beneath the sink is another cupboard, and there’s a dishwasher on the right. Lindsay made the most of the corner by planning in a blind cupboard with a pull-out mechanism.

In the breakfast bar unit there are three wide drawers, which are useful for storing plates, pans and large bowls.
“The cabinet shade was the owner’s idea – she has a really good eye for colour,” Lindsay says. “We originally looked at grey tones, but that didn’t reflect her personality.”
The flat-fronted design with integrated J handles ties in with the contemporary look the owner was after.

The owners sourced a neat, 20mm engineered quartz worktop with cut-out draining grooves for the under-mounted sink.
The black tap works well with the plum-hued cabinets and is complemented by matching plug sockets and wall lights.

A striking brass splashback sits beneath a hidden extractor fan. To the left of the oven is a pull-out bin.
The wall shelves add colour and character. “They’re made from kitchen offcuts, so they’re a really nice, sustainable element,” Lindsay says.

Opposite the sink is a larder cupboard, which is ideal for storing crockery as well as food. It’s positioned next to the fridge-freezer to make unloading shopping easy. The owner chose a bright orange shade for the interior to add a fun feature.
Cork flooring provides a soft, warm texture underfoot and adds another sustainable element to the space.
