This is great advice. It's incredibly stressful and really hard work to move countries or even just cities/town - but if you put in the effort in the first few months - all above tips plus make sure you're using every opportunity to meet people - accept every invitation - by the 6 month mark you WILL be acclimatised and content. If possible do your homework before you go: look online for clubs (sporting, craft, classes etc) to join and ask all your contacts for names of any friends/associates they may have in your new area - be sure to look them up and meet for coffee or a drink for top tips on local knowledge etc. This is not a time to be shy - reinvent yourself!

I was born and bred in Johannesburg and after being widowed, moved to the Middle East. A vastly different culture and language and food. Someone mentioned queues. Here too you now walk into a bank, post office, anywhere and ask who is last. And then you know when it is your turn. But you also keep close to the person on front of you, less so,some tries to push in. Nevertheless someone will always come and try to push in saying "I just want to ask a question" and spend half an hour with the teller etc.. Once bitten twice shy. The language is different, the personal space is different, the climate is different, he food is different, the culture is VERY different, but I would not change it for all the world and am slowly learning the language and am making friends. And fitting in.

Good luck all of you going through this experience. Accept your host country and all its quirks. And adapt and try to fit in.
