Room Tour: A Clever Layout Creates Two Walk-in Wardrobes
A simple repositioning of the bed opened up the potential of this large bedroom
While the bedroom in this new-build house is large, the previous layout wasn’t effective, with a distinct lack of storage and a lot of wasted space. The owners found Iliada Rossi of Rossi Studio on Houzz when they needed someone to design their open-plan living space downstairs, and were so pleased with her work, they asked her to renovate the hallway and their bedroom, too.
In here, they wanted to make the most of the gorgeous view, bring in some practical storage and dressing areas, and add a seating corner where they could relax and read. They also wanted the room to feel soft, comfortable and luxurious. Iliada set about fulfilling the brief, and transformed the once bland room into a stylish, timeless space that works perfectly for the couple’s needs.

“The clients were really keen to have soft materials in the bedroom,” Iliada says. “So the headboard and cushions are all made from a velvety fabric.” The fluffy throw adds to this luxurious feel.

Floating bedside tables, each with a useful drawer and open shelf, are fitted to the veneered panel. “There are storage drawers beneath the bed, so we had to ensure the bedsides were the right size to allow the underbed drawers to be pulled out easily,” Iliada says.
A practical reading light is fitted above each bedside table. “All of the lighting and curtains are connected to a Smart system,” Iliada says. “So [the couple can] control everything from the bed with a remote control, or with an app or even voice control. It also adds a level of security, as, when they’re away, the holiday mode setting will mimic their day-to-day activities, such as drawing the curtains and turning the lights on and off.”

The female member of the couple has the walk-in wardrobe behind the bed. A dressing table is located in front of the window to provide plenty of natural light for her when she’s getting ready. “We made the dressing table bespoke with the precise number of drawers to store everything she needs,” Iliada says.

Alongside this is a wardrobe with mirrored sliding doors, which has been fitted out with hanging space, drawers and shelves.
There are also some hooks opposite. “She’s quite tall, so we made sure these were at the correct height for her to hang long dresses and robes from without them hitting the floor,” Iliada says.

A mid-pile wool and polyester carpet gives a soft, velvety feel underfoot.
Iliada used the Houzz Clipper tool to source all of the products for the project. “We collect the sourcing items and send them to the client on a Selections board,” she says. “We find it really straightforward. It allows the clients see different options and accept or refuse each one.”

The owner loves to read with a cup of coffee in the morning, so Iliada created a little reading corner for her next to the window. “We incorporated a coffee station into the husband’s dressing area,” she says. “She loves sitting there looking outside or reading before a busy day.”

The owner also enjoys reading in the evening, so Iliada sourced a delicate reading light to provide illumination when it gets dark outside.

At the foot of the bed, a partition separates the sleeping area from the husband’s dressing room. This space is fitted out with a wardrobe, shelves and the coffee station.
It’s these types of details that Iliada says are really important. “With residential clients, you really need to get to know them,” she says. “For example, I’ll ask about books they like, or poems that might inspire some wall art, or what’s the first thing they do when they wake up.
“The clients love their new space,” she adds. “They have the wow factor combined with a homely feel.”

The placement of the bed in this luxurious room was key to unlocking a more useable layout. Designer Iliada Rossi positioned the large emperor-sized bed in the centre of the room in order for the couple to enjoy the view of the garden and also to create a walk-in wardrobe behind.
A floor-to ceiling panel with a dark wood veneer provides an elegant contrast to a lighter, full-height headboard. Iliada used linear designs on the throw, headboard and even the pendant light to emphasise height in the room.
