Room Tour: A Cosy, Timber-clad Bedroom With a Walk-in Wardrobe
Confident design and modern finishes create a master bedroom and bathroom that are light and airy, yet warm and snug
The owners of this new-build property in North London were keen to make the most of the clean lines in their master bedroom, but didn’t just want a white box. By bringing in warm colours and natural textures, interior designer Kia Stanford has created a cocooning space where the couple can relax and enjoy the view of their leafy terrace.
The panelling that runs up the wall and across the ceiling, framing the bed, adds a Scandi log-cabin effect. “It’s all reclaimed wood,” Stanford says. “We wanted to give that nod to the inside-outside mood here, as you have those beautiful large windows framing a leafy view.”

Though the room is simple and clean-lined, graphic touches help bring it to life. “As much as they adore the light, the guys didn’t just want a white box,” Stanford explains. “They have a really good appreciation of design and style. We pulled in some gorgeous grey tones and had a bit of fun with beautiful bright yellow.”
The concrete steps were put in so the owners could easily step out through the window onto the terrace. Planters next to the steps reinforce the inside-outside theme.

The new bedroom features a smart walk-in wardrobe. “We put in a glass sliding door that lets light in, but hides away clothing,” the designer says.

The smoked-glass sliding door conceals all the clothes, shoes and accessories to keep the bedroom clutter-free. “We chose a glass with a grey-blue tone, as we didn’t want it to be too brown,” Stanford says.

The wardrobe has plenty of shelf and hanging space to accommodate all of the couple’s clothes.
Tackling the bathroom was also part of the project. One thing that was a challenge in here was sourcing the black fixtures, which add a cool edge. “We didn’t just want to go with chrome, we wanted to make a statement,” Stanford explains.
The niche behind the taps features hexagonal mosaics, surrounded by large hexagonal tiles. “It’s nice to show how you can use so many different materials all within one space and it still looks clean and open,” she adds.

The bright yellow taps add a vibrant edge. “They’re wonderful to play around with. It means you have this nice vibrancy with the petrol blue on the floating unit underneath,” Stanford says.

The ‘marble’ on the bathroom walls is actually book-matched porcelain – a great tip if you love the look of marble, but not the maintenance.

Kia Stanford was brought in to remodel the master bedroom and bathroom in this new-build house. In the bedroom, she’s gone for a clean-lined, Scandi feel, with rich timber cladding further lifted by bright yellow, orange and red accessories.
“We aimed for a slightly pared-back feel, but still wanted to make sure it had warmth,” Stanford says. “Having the artworks to provide colour was really important.”
