belindakor I'm so sorry to hear that! I had a loft conversion done on my south London flat when my second daughter was about 6 months old. The initial work was done at lightening speed (the builders were from somewhere up north and stayed in their van throughout, so had every incentive to get the work completed asap) and it was still hell. She had started crawling and I would find her chewing on a masonry nail because she was teething, while her sister was swinging from the loft ladder like a monkey :D Unfortunately all the other trades were not as motivated and everything from the plastering to the final fix took over six months, trying to keep the house in some kind of order throughout felt like King Canute ordering back the waves...As we had used a company that coordinated all the work for a fixed price, we didn't go over budget, but it meant we couldn't shop around either and they became increasingly deaf as tradesmen failed to turn up on the agreed dates or left jobs half done...So your daughter has all my sympathies I hope the work is finished soon and that all the aggravation doesn't spoil her enjoyment of her new space :)

Oh you poor folk... though I too had a nightmare with builders long ago when I had a house and a marriage! The company came highly recommended by our solicitor! They worked hard I'll grant you that but problems abounded... to tell the whole story would fill the limit of the comment box... is there one? We actually moved out as so much work was being done but I was on site every day to keep on top of the nightmare... like finding the guys trying to yank the bathroom basin off the wall which would have taken the irreplaceable tiles with it, had I not stopped them. What were they trying to do? Replace tiling on the floor but they didn't ask me first and I had to show them that the pedestal was indeed removable! I think I went bald pulling my hair out over the 6 months it took... VETTING ANY TRADER IS ESSENTIAL... I use Check-A-Trade generally though they're often booked up months in advance which is a drawback and more expensive too.

An interior designer friend runs a workshop where she actually says "think REALLY hard before you commit to building up or out". Sometimes - just re-configuring existing space and getting rid of unwanted crap is better than calling in builders. It's a disease these days that everybody wants to tear their house or flat apart. Also - bear in mind now we've Brexited - there will be a lot less Eastern European builders to bale out the demand - which can only mean less competition and more 'bodge & scarper' merchants. Apologies in profusion to the good guys - I know you are stellar - but you aside - there are some TERRIBLE tradespeople out there - especially in London.
