I'm sorry, but I don't think open shelves make the room look bigger. Actually, it's quite the opposite. But it does make the room look cosier, if the space is not too cramped and the furniture well done/placed.

I think the storage wall is a great idea. It wouldn't have to be very deep to take all manner of assorted items with the appearance of not being there at all.
