The Millennial Flatshare
For thirtysomethings with a busy work schedule, this living space is the perfect room in which to unwind.
“The owners are two friends in their thirties who need a space to relax and entertain,” explain designers Simone Gordon and Sophie van Winden of Owl Design. “One’s a chef and the other’s employed by a tech company, so they both work long hours.”
Sophie and Simone combined a colour scheme of burnt oranges, soft greens and pale pinks with textures such as wicker and velvet to create a room where the owners can chill out and socialise with friends.
Sustainability was also on the flatmates’ wish-list, so the Owl team chose long-lasting furniture made using traditional craft techniques.

The Dog Lovers’ Creative Quarters
With many of us leading busy, tech-filled lives, this calm bedroom is a welcome place to unplug and recharge. “The owners spend a lot of time in front of computer screens or on the phone,” say designers Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead of 2LG Studio. “So it’s important their bedroom is a sanctuary, somewhere they can recharge their batteries and kick-start their creativity each morning.”
The couple love travel and fashion, and let their mini dachshund sleep on the bed. Jordan and Russell zoned the long, thin space to create a chill-out area and wardrobe zone, with a modern clothes rail and dressing table. “Our favourite thing in the space is the wallpaper – a witty nod to the owners’ beloved animal companion,” they say.

The Renter’s Sanctuary
If you’re a professional woman who loves cosy nights in and chill-out time with friends, you’ll feel at home in the gorgeous living room created by Sacha Berger of Honey Bee Interiors.
“This space is designed for a fortysomething woman,” says Sacha. “She’s a journalist and loves nights in and enjoying her space.”
Sacha chose a muted colour palette, a relaxed sofa to share with friends, and enough storage to display her client’s favourite books and collected pieces. As it’s a rented home, there are plenty of freestanding pieces that can easily be transported to a new property.
Sacha’s favourite part of the room is the sofa area. “This is where I’d be most happy spending time and socialising with girlfriends,” she says.

The Family Hangout
If you have trouble keeping your home organised with teenage kids around, take a look at the family space designed by Clare Gaskin and Brian Woulfe of Designed By Woulfe. The owners are a fiftysomething couple with teenage offspring.
“This is where the family hang out for dinner, catch up after school and work, or enjoy playing board games at weekends,” the designers say. They combined midcentury pieces with practical and affordable solutions, incorporating a stylish sideboard for storage and a dining table that doubles up for homework.

The City Dweller’s Abode
The owner of this fun space is an ambitious, independent woman who enjoys drinking cocktails with friends. Designer Shanade McAllister-Fisher says, “I wanted to create a harmonious, multi-purpose space that would see two activities sitting alongside each other: work and relaxation.“
She achieved this by using two colours to split the room – a dark, dreamy blue surrounds the relaxing bed area, while a lighter blue defines the active dressing, working, studying and reading spaces.
Shanade describes the room as “dreamy and whimsical while maintaining punch, strength and character”.

The Perfect Masculine Retreat
Colour, comfort and space were the three key considerations for this room, created for a single man in his fifties. Designer Brooke Copp-Barton’s client “loves design and wants a contemporary, industrial look that’s also relaxing and inviting”.
She brought in some practical storage solutions, and wanted to show that you can make a design statement on a smaller budget. “The room is low on maintenance, but high on affordable design,” she says.

The Chic Sisters’ Playful Hideaway
“The biggest challenge with children’s bedrooms is designing them to appeal to their current age, but with longevity in mind,” says interiors blogger Dee Campling, who was tasked with the job of creating a room for two girls of 6 and 8. “I wanted this bedroom to last the sisters into their teens without having to be redecorated,” she explains.
Dee designed a room that’s flexible and neutral enough to grow with the girls, with plenty of practical storage. It’s a mix of Scandinavian and boho style, with a fresh palette of white, green, pink and black.

The Modern Family Pad
Fitting a family and their pet into a small space isn’t always easy, but the designers at homestay specialist At Home with Hostmaker rose to the challenge. Their clients are a couple in their late forties with a five-year-old child. In their downtime, they like cycling and yoga.
To help the family make the most of their space, the team designed a multi-functional living room, complete with play area.
“The space itself is quite small, so we had to think of creative ways to optimise it without it feeling cluttered,” explains designer Georgina. “We’ve used the wall for bike storage and other gym equipment, and we’ve added in a space-saving shoe rack and shelving for their accessories.”

For one week only, Houzz is opening the doors of a pop-up experience set in a historical Bermondsey warehouse. The old tannery has been transformed into eight beautiful room sets, which aim to show how anyone can achieve their dream home, regardless of size or budget. And the best bit? All the design pieces on display are shoppable on Houzz.
Houzz surveyed more than 2,000 people to find out what they really wanted from their homes. The results were the starting point to help nine leading interior design studios create rooms that reflect specific homeowners’ and renters’ needs and desires. Here’s an overview of what you can expect to find in each of the eight beautiful rooms.
