4. Encourage inside and outside play
If you have space for a playroom, it’s lovely if it can have a connection to the garden as well. This space, created by Kinder Design, is perfectly placed so the children can move easily from indoors to outdoors when a grown-up is on hand to supervise.
The real beauty of this room, however, is that the kids can still connect with nature even when they’re indoors. A huge picture window has been kitted out with a deep seat, where the children can snuggle up and enjoy the view of the garden. It’s perfect for observing birds on a feeder or watching raindrops patter on the window.

3. Add in a cosy nook
Kids love a hidden den or corner that they can retreat to for some drawing, reading or daydreaming, and this cute space by Otta Design is ideal. Tucked into a corner of the room, the seat has been built into some joinery that probably covers the whole wall.
Tongue-and-groove panelling in a complementary yet darker tone adds to that snug feel, and some strategically placed shelves provide handy surfaces and personality.
If you’re thinking of adding a cosy corner like this, don’t forget to incorporate lighting. Panelling is really handy if you want to avoid drilling into the walls to install wiring. The wiring can just slot behind the panels, but do make sure you still ask a qualified electrician to help.

2. Choose a scheme that will last
When planning a kid’s room, it’s a good idea to think long term. Consider a design that will take your offspring from young child to teenager without major changes being necessary. This room, created by Mia Karlsson Interior Design, does just that.
The soft green palette works at any age, and is teamed with good-quality wooden furniture that will stand up to some wear and tear.
The mural wallpaper adds a fun, playful touch to the room without being too childish for a teen.

1. Create a safe and comfy bunk
If you’re thinking that bunk beds must always consist of a raised platform with a low barrier and a ladder to access it, think again. This bespoke model by Balance Interior Design does things differently.
The top bunk is enclosed by struts that go all the way to the ceiling, ensuring the child sleeping above feels safe and secure. The steps are also a sturdier design than the usual ladder, so safety is again a plus.
The bed is full of additional inspiring ideas, such as the storage drawers beneath the bottom bunk and shelves under the steps, as well as padded recessed headboards and useful wall-hung readings lights. With these clever features and its gorgeous green colour, it’s easy to see why this was the most-saved kids space image of autumn 2024.

A desk doesn’t have to be purely functional, particularly when it’s in the room of an imaginative young person.
The team at Decorbuddi collaborated with the 17-year-old girl who lives here to build a desk in a beautiful colour that she loves. The shade teams well with the pale green wall and chair, and the fairy lights and display shelves provide creative inspiration while she’s sitting there.
