Exposed bulbs are certainly a trend that's come from commercial premises - once all the high street stores have adopted a theme we all know it's going to end up in homes too. I don't think the industrial look will ever go away completely as raw materials are so interesting. But they need to be used sparingly and mixed with other styles and rich colours to keep the look different to what everyone else is doing - as the room example above. On a practical note, always use a dimmer to create a varied ambience.
