Trends: How to Incorporate Luxurious Marble into Your Home
Beautiful, delicate, luxurious… Even a little marble can add a shot of sophistication to any room
If many of this year’s design shows, including Clerkenwell Design Week and Milan Design Week, were anything to go by, our love of marble shows no signs of fading. From the expected – worktops and bathroom tiles – to the unexpected – chimney breast anyone? – marble can work in numerous settings and ways. Check out these ideas for welcoming this luxurious stone into your home.
Don’t limit marble to worktops
Marble on the top of this island would look gorgeous, but run down the sides, too, it turns it into a stunning focal point for the whole space. This Calacatta marble can’t help but be the star of the show, adding beautiful, subtle pattern to the otherwise white scheme.

Add just a slice
If marble, which is soft and easily stains, is not right for your kitchen and style of cooking, consider adding just a slab to benefit from its beauty without a big commitment. Team with robust materials, such as composite or wood, to create a breakfast bar or section for pastry rolling.

Pair marble with dramatic lighting
Create a cool, contemporary space by pairing marble with stainless steel and adding some dramatic lighting to really make it shine. This blue wash on the side of the island really brings out the veining and would give evening gatherings a party mood.

Consider a bath surround
If a whole marble bathroom – or even one wall – is out of reach, consider a marble bath surround. Rather like the marble kitchen island, it creates a stunning focal point in the room, immediately drawing the eye. This
Statuario marble has dark veining, and is pattern enough in the serene white space.

Accessorise with marble
Marble is increasingly being used in smaller accessories, such as lamp bases, book ends and fruit bowls. Having one or two of these pieces is a great way to enjoy the luxury of marble in an easy, affordable way.

Think beyond kitchens and bathrooms
Marble is known for keeping cool (hence its use in pastry-making) so it creates an interesting tension when it’s used for cladding a chimney breast. This slab is a sharp contrast to the warm brick interior of the fireplace, and makes an incredible focal point for the room.

Use marble as an accent
Marble fireplaces are nothing new, but this wraparound Carrara trim is a novel, and less costly, way to bring marble into your living room, adding an indulgent touch without breaking the bank. It’s a great option if you have a 1930s fireplace, say, and want to refresh it without ripping it out completely.

Take to the floor
For a seriously luxe look, clad the bedroom floor in marble. Keep the décor similarly pale so it doesn’t overshadow the polished stone. Remember that marble is cold, though, so you’ll have to invest in some fluffy slippers!

We’re used to seeing large-scale tiles or slabs of marble, but smaller tiles can add interest, with the veins crashing into each other to form interesting patterns. Go a step further and use different sizes and shapes of marble tile within the same space, as here, for depth. The warm, natural wood in this room helps to focus the scheme and prevent it feeling stark.
