The garden designer is not the expensive bit to be honest. It is the build and implementation. The designer can actually save you money by ensuring the design works and delivers what you want, is properly constructed by a reputable contractor and is populated with plants that will thrive in your garden environment. So much time and money gets wasted on shoddy builds and plants that are not suited to the local conditions.

There are lots of garden design books out there if you want to try your hand - and it can be great fun.

I believe a garden is constant evolution anyway! I'm building up to making a few changes and looking forward to it!

Thanks for this article; good advice and lovely garden images. I'd say that for the North of England and Scotland, you don't want to plant in Autumn, since the winters are harsher, but in very early Spring, still during the bare-root availability season. There's plenty of moisture around to help the plants settle in and the ground will be warming which will encourage quick rooting.

And I'd like to reinforce the comments about how long a project can take: you're paying for well-thought-through professional advice/designs, and careful implementation; that takes its time.
