Thanks for this article; good advice and lovely garden images. I'd say that for the North of England and Scotland, you don't want to plant in Autumn, since the winters are harsher, but in very early Spring, still during the bare-root availability season. There's plenty of moisture around to help the plants settle in and the ground will be warming which will encourage quick rooting.

And I'd like to reinforce the comments about how long a project can take: you're paying for well-thought-through professional advice/designs, and careful implementation; that takes its time.

A really helpful article thinking ahead and allowing plenty of time is required for the design, costing and planning of a garden and to build relationships between clients, designer and contractor.

We receive a lot of enquiries at this time of year were clients are looking forward to spring and summer and being in their gardens. However, many good quality and experienced landscapers may already have full diaries so do plan ahead.

Withe the climate changing we are now seeing extended periods for planting - unless of course it rains incessantly like it has been for the last 3-4 months!

Aiming to get the hard landscaping done while the rest of the house is being renovated so that we're not carting muck around but there's a huge amount of scheduling to do.
