Subtle colour choices
How do you feel about colour in your bathroom? If you’d rather keep things neutral, you’re not alone. Nearly half of the those we surveyed said they’d opted for white walls and vanity units, with grey (at 20% for walls and 14% for vanity units) coming second. Beige is also popular on walls, as 12% said that was their shade of choice.
For those who do go for some colour, green and blue are the go-to hues: 8% of respondents went for a blue vanity unit and around 5% chose green or blue for their wall colour.
The beige and white walls in this space by Souq Design are complemented by a mid-toned wood vanity unit, a surface that 7% of survey respondents chose for their bathrooms.

A cosy ambience
Homeowners have tapped into the importance of lighting for making a space feel cosy, even when it comes to a functional room like a bathroom. Many of you are using layered lighting to create spaces that have an inviting ambience.
While ceiling lights are at the top of the list for bathroom lighting choices (61%), recessed lights come a close second (47%), with lighted mirrors and wall lights following (38% and 22%, respectively). The wall lights in this bathroom designed by Wells and Maguire give the space a lovely soft glow.
Around 10% of respondents are taking the lighting mood up even more of a notch by incorporating shower lights, mood lighting in the shower and built-in bath lighting.

Features with longevity
Safety is paramount when you’re navigating slippery surfaces in a bathroom, particularly as you age. So it makes sense that many of the survey respondents chose features to help with mobility issues. Over a third went for grab bars in their baths, and 12% chose them for the shower, while another third opted for a non-slip floor in their bath.
Other practical solutions chosen by survey respondents included a tall or extra tall toilet (11%) and a shower seat (12%), like the perch in this bathroom by Click London.

Smart tech
There’s an abundance of tech features that can make your bathroom function at its best, and Houzz users are incorporating some of them in their spaces.
While the standard ventilation fans (85%) and heating (26%) are still at the top of your systems wish lists, some of the survey respondents added a handy dehumidifier (5%), built-in plug sockets in the vanity unit (18%), some whirlpool jets in the bath (2%) and even a home entertainment system (4%), as in this design by AV Genie.

Cleanliness and tidiness
Who doesn’t want an organised, squeaky-clean bathroom? And all the better if we can design a space that makes that easy to achieve. Our survey participants certainly think so, with many of them choosing features that make hygiene and organisation simple and efficient.
Those who opt for a freestanding bath, for example, are more likely to go for a model with a flat bottom, like this one in a bathroom by MJ Construction. These are easier to clean around than those with feet that need to be swept and mopped underneath.
Tidying is also important, with built-in organisers in vanity units being popular with 30% of participants.
The loo is a key area when it comes to hygiene, and nearly a third of respondents chose self-cleaning features for their toilet. Another third opted for a hygienic motion-activated seat and cover, while 16% went for a hands-free flush.
