Boulders and Japanese maple

Contemporary Garden, Charlotte

A thoughtfully placed boulder performs multiple functions by holding back the berm, providing a third dimension to the slab stone sidewalk, acting as a transition point between garden bed and hardscape, and providing a stage for the 'Orangeola' Japanese maple to drape and show off its amazing color and structure. An underplanting of juniperus procumbens 'Nana' will fill in to show off the maple foliage even more over time. Photo by Jay Sifford
