The main condition suggested by the owner for the design of this permanent home was to direct the views to the vast lagoon that is on the rear façade of the land.
To this end, we designed an inverted L layout, withdrawing the access to the house towards the center of the lot, allowing for wider perspectives at the rear of the lot and without limits to the environment.
Aligned on the front façade are the garages, study, toilet and service rooms: laundry, pantry, one bedroom, one bathroom and the barbecue area.
This geometry created a long path towards the entrance of the house, which was designed by combining vehicle and pedestrian access.
The social areas are organized from the access hall around an inner yard that integrates natural light to the different environments. The kitchen, the dining room, the gallery and the sitting room are aligned and overlooking the lagoon. The sitting room has a double height, incorporating the stairs over one of the sides of the inner yard and an in-out swimming pool that is joined to the lake visually and serves as separation from the master suite.
The upper floor is organized around the double-height space, also benefiting from the views of the environment, the inner yard and the garden. Its plan is made up of two full guest suites and a large study prepared for the owners’ work, also enjoying the best views of the lagoon, not just from its privileged location in height but also from its sides made of glass towards the exterior and towards the double height of the sitting room.

Perched above Elliott Bay on a tiny 2,020 square foot triangular lot on the west side of Queen Ann hill, this new custom residence features almost 3,000 square feet of living space. The form of the house reflects the marine environment below, evoking sails and hulls. Three bedrooms, three and one-half bathrooms, open living, kitchen, and dining spaces, garages, a wine room and a work loft are all incorporated into a gull-wing shell that sits on a solid concrete base.
Generous eating/play terraces face the views of the bay and West Seattle to the southwest while a small sunken garden to the north is designed to celebrate the houses’ rainwater. A large swath of Seattle Parks + Recreation land to the east of the residence was reclaimed and landscaped for use by the residents.

New Yorkers are always on the prowl for innovative ways to make the most of the space they have. An upper east side couple, challenged with a slightly narrow L shaped apartment sought out Decor Aid’s help to make the most of their Manhattan condo. Paired with one of our senior designer, Kimberly P., we learned that the clients wanted a space that looked beautiful, comfortable and also packed with functionality for everyday living.
“Immediately upon seeing the space, I knew that we needed to create a narrative that allowed the design to control how you moved through the space,” reports Kimberly, senior interior designer.
After surveying each room and learning a bit more about their personal style, we started with the living room remodel. It was clear that the couple wanted to infuse mid-century modern into the design plan. Sourcing the Room & Board Jasper Sofa with its narrow arms and tapered legs, it offered the mid-century look, with the modern comfort the clients are used to. Velvet accent pillows from West Elm and Crate & Barrel add pops of colors but also a subtle touch of luxury, while framed pictures from the couple’s honeymoon personalize the space.
Moving to the dining room next, Kimberly decided to add a blue accent wall to emphasize the Horchow two piece Percussion framed art that was to be the focal point of the dining area. The Seno sideboard from Article perfectly accentuated the mid-century style the clients loved while providing much-needed storage space. The palette used throughout both rooms were very New York style, grays, blues, beiges, and whites, to add depth, Kimberly sourced decorative pieces in a mixture of different metals.
“The artwork above their bureau in the bedroom is photographs that her father took,”
Moving into the bedroom renovation, our designer made sure to continue to stick to the client’s style preference while once again creating a personalized, warm and comforting space by including the photographs taken by the client’s father. The Avery bed added texture and complimented the other colors in the room, while a hidden drawer at the foot pulls out for attached storage, which thrilled the clients. A deco-inspired Faceted mirror from West Elm was a perfect addition to the bedroom due to the illusion of space it provides. The result was a bedroom that was full of mid-century design, personality, and area so they can freely move around.
The project resulted in the form of a layered mid-century modern design with touches of luxury but a space that can not only be lived in but serves as an extension of the people who live there. Our designer was able to take a very narrowly shaped Manhattan apartment and revamp it into a spacious home that is great for sophisticated entertaining or comfortably lazy nights in.

The kitchen and breakfast area are kept simple and modern, featuring glossy flat panel cabinets, modern appliances and finishes, as well as warm woods. The dining area was also given a modern feel, but we incorporated strong bursts of red-orange accents. The organic wooden table, modern dining chairs, and artisan lighting all come together to create an interesting and picturesque interior.

This project was simply furnishing the front room of a small Portland apartment. The apartment is north-facing so we chose a soft yellow for the ceiling to bring in a feeling of warmth and sunlight. The walls are a pale grey, and both colors find their way into the layers of Emily’s abstracted land and sea scape mural.

This project began with a handsome center-entrance Colonial Revival house in a neighborhood where land values and house sizes had grown enormously since my clients moved there in the 1980s. Tear-downs had become standard in the area, but the house was in excellent condition and had a lovely recent kitchen. So we kept the existing structure as a starting point for additions that would maximize the potential beauty and value of the site
A highly detailed Gambrel-roofed gable reaches out to the street with a welcoming entry porch. The existing dining room and stair hall were pushed out with new glazed walls to create a bright and expansive interior. At the living room, a new angled bay brings light and a feeling of spaciousness to what had been a rather narrow room.
At the back of the house, a six-sided family room with a vaulted ceiling wraps around the existing kitchen. Skylights in the new ceiling bring light to the old kitchen windows and skylights.
At the head of the new stairs, a book-lined sitting area is the hub between the master suite, home office, and other bedrooms.

The interior redesign job at Frank and Kay Dickens' residence started with the purchase of one extraordinary piece of furniture and ultimately led to a home completely transformed. It’s a trend we see repeated with our customers time and time again. Read more about this project > http://cantoni.com/interior-design-services/projects/tranquillite-project.
