Keep it lightThe type of chair you choose really depends on how often you sit at your desk. If you’re only using a home office now and again, you can get away with a less-practical solution than if you were using the space for a large proportion of your day. If you’re planning on staying for a while at your desk, it’s a good idea to choose an office chair that’s been designed for the job. Not keen on those big, black leather options? Go for a lighter colour and choose a design that tucks in unassumingly beneath the desk, such as this Eames classic.

Plan like a proDefinitely finalise your design before starting any work, rather than trying to do it as you go along. The process will be much more enjoyable without constant deadlines presenting themselves, and if you haven’t planned, you might find your options restricted based on work that’s already taken place. Take a couple of weeks to put it all together, write your specifications, draw up the plans, get everything ready and make all the decisions before proceeding. This will save you time and money along the way and significantly reduce stress levels during the project. This clever design features well-thought-out lighting and bespoke joinery. Careful consideration would have been given to where to position the sockets, radiators, lights, switches and all the other details.

Clear your desk of all clutterThis tip is about fighting off distractions. If there’s nothing on your desk but the laptop or your notes, the chances of focusing on the screen or notepad are much higher than if there are things around that might distract you. A step up from this would be making sure there’s nothing distracting on the laptop itself, but that’s a whole different story…Consider your desk’s surface as a perfect starting point for practicing minimalism. To help you do that, get a desk with drawers so you can put away all unnecessary items. Clearing everything off your desk for the night when you’re done is a great way to start the morning fresh and stop you feeling overwhelmed by all the awaiting tasks.

Go bespoke If your budget permits, there’s nothing more sleek and sophisticated than custom joinery that fits perfectly. Awkward nooks and crannies are incorporated into useful shelves and drawers, leaving plenty of workspace for two. For a desk with a view, build across the window. Iconic Eames office chairs, meanwhile, offer design and comfort combined.
