What Houzz contributors are saying:

Edit your storage furnitureYou might think you have to find storage for absolutely everything that’s lurking in your bedroom, but that’s not necessarily the case. Too much storage furniture can actually clutter up the space, so before you plan the layout of your sleep space, spend some time decluttering first. Keep in mind what you want your finished space to look – and feel – like, and be as ruthless as possible when considering what to keep and what to let go of. By minimising the possessions that are kept in the bedroom, you’ll be able to choose fewer, more beautiful, storage pieces to complement your scheme.

Space each side of a double bedA space of 60cm each side of a double bed is perfect for the purposes of both making the bed and of placing a convenient bedside table or locker for each occupant. It is worth choosing a bed size to suit this rule of thumb, as opposed to shoe-horning in one that will leave you feeling constricted.

Tread softlyCarpet will help to turn your bedroom into a luxurious cocoon. Choose a soft shade of mushroom for visual warmth, too. Combine with a lighter, toning wall colour, as here, for a space that feels bright but cosy. A large mirror placed strategically opposite the window will bounce the light all around the room.

The second of the three bedrooms is decorated in a paler palette of greys.
