    I agree with Sophie that there are issues with conspicuous consumption. However, it's very short sighted. When people spend money, it creates jobs, that make other people able to support their families. The reality is, capitalism is a machine who's blood is money. If the money doesn't move, then people who are wealthy would just hoard it. So, there's truly an upside to people spending money on these projects. The reality is, they are not much happier than normal folks...the excitement is often in building the project. Haven't you ever seen custom mansions being sold a mere 10 years after the owner designed every aspect of it? You can't take it with you anyways.
