Edwardian Study - Sussex
Edwardian Study - Sussex
Design & LoDesign & Lo
We were commissioned to design a new study in a period Edwardian property in Sussex. We designed the room to maximise existing features including restoring the architraves and the timber flooring. We introduced a white painted finish to the floors and installed wall panelling to contrast the fresh wall colour. Finally we layered artwork and decorations on the shelves to finish. The owners, who are keen travellers had collected many objects on their expeditions and wanted to integrate this into the new design. As keen skiers, we sourced a vintage pair of skis to help complete the design.

The image displays a streamlined home office area that is the epitome of modern minimalism. The built-in desk and shelving unit are painted in a soft neutral tone, providing a clean and cohesive look that blends seamlessly with the room's decor. The open shelves are thoughtfully curated with a mix of books, decorative objects, and greenery, adding a personal touch and a bit of nature to the workspace. A stylish, contemporary desk lamp with a gold finish stands on the desk, offering task lighting with a touch of elegance. The simplicity of the lamp's design complements the overall minimalist aesthetic of the space. The chair at the desk is a modern design piece itself, featuring a black frame with a woven seat and backrest, adding texture and contrast to the space without sacrificing comfort or style. The choice of chair underscores the room's modern vibe and dedication to form as well as function. Underfoot, the carpet's plush texture provides comfort and warmth, anchoring the work area and contrasting with the sleek lines of the furniture. This office space is a testament to a design philosophy that values clean lines, functionality, and a calming color palette to create an environment conducive to productivity and creativity.

Horizontal glazing in the study sits at seating height offering a panoramic view of the surrounding garden and wildlife. The walls are finished in a dark hue of soft matte green that absorbs the natural light creating the illusion of depth. A bespoke walnut desk with sliding doors paired with a burnt orange desk lamp and velvet upholstered armchairs add autumnal tones contrasted with brushed brass lighting and accessories. The study is a calm and cocooning creating the perfect place to think, read and reflect.

In the home's study, the homeowner requested a modern masculine design in a color "that was something different and unexpected." "What about green??" was our reply. And he loved the idea! Our team transformed the once all white space into a sophisticated study. First, we smoothed the existing drywall and added panel moulding, a chair rail and crown moulding. Next, we replaced the ceiling fan with a modern acrylic light fixture and added a sleek picture light between the new bookcases. Luxurious custom drapery panels, a remote-control window shade, upholstered guest chairs and a soft rug add warmth to the space. A modern desk and bookcases and a comfortable office chair complete the space. Now, this handsome office is ready to work!

MOTIF transformed a standard bedroom into this artful and inviting home office with the potential of being used a guest room when the occasion arises. Soft wall colors, a textured area rug, a built in desk are counterpoint to a cozy sofa bench -- which doubles as a twin bed or can be transformed into a queen bed by pulling the pieces apart and reconnecting them in another configuration. It is a surprising and unexpected room and is both functional and beautiful.

Her Office will primarily serve as a craft room for her and kids, so we did a cork floor that would be easy to clean and still comfortable to sit on. The fabrics are all indoor/outdoor and commercial grade for durability. We wanted to maintain a girly look so we added really feminine touches with the crystal chandelier, floral accessories to match the wallpaper and pink accents through out the room to really pop against the green. This is the closet in that second guest room, now a living space, that we converted into a guest office. We removed the doors, added the desk and installed a flat screen that is out of site except when you are seated on the sofa or in the chair, visible but invisible. Sleek modern look with brushed nickel accents continued. Photo Credit: Robert Thien
