We gave this large kitchen a completely new look! We brought the style up-to-date and added in some much needed counter space and storage. We loved the quirky charm of the original design, so we made to sure to keep it's unique style very much a part of the new design through the use of mixed materials. Artisanal hand-made floating shelves (made out of old barn wood) along with the exposed wooden beams create a soft but powerful statement -- warm and earthy but strikingly trendy. The rich woods from the floating shelves and height-adjustable pull-out pantry contrast beautifully with the glistening glass cabinets, which offer the perfect place to show off their stunning glassware. By installing new countertops, cabinets, and a peninsula, we were able to drastically improve the amount of workspace. The peninsula offers a place to dine, work, or even use as a buffet - just the kind of functionality and versatility our clients were looking for. The marble backsplash and stainless steel work table add a subtle touch of modernism, that blends extremely well with the more rustic elements. Also, the stainless steel table was the perfect solution for a make-shift island since this older kitchen did not have the typical width that is needed to add a built-in island (plus, it can easily be moved to fit the needs of the homeowners!). Other features include a brand new exhaust fan, which wasn't included in the original design, and entire leveling of the new hardwood floors, which were previously sinking down almost a foot from one side of the space to the other. Designed by Chi Renovation & Design who serve Chicago and it's surrounding suburbs, with an emphasis on the North Side and North Shore. Condos are often a challenge – can’t move water, venting has to remain connected to existing ducting and recessed cans may not be an option. In this project, we had an added challenge – we could not lower the ceiling on the exterior wall due to a continual leak issue that the HOA has put off due to the multi-million-dollar expense. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Work Centers: prep, baking, clean up, message, beverage and entertaining. Vignette Design: avoid wall to wall cabinets, enhance the work center philosophy Geometry: create a more exciting and natural flow ANGLES: the baking center features a Miele wall oven and Liebherr Freezer, the countertop is 36” deep (allowing for an extra deep appliance garage with stainless tambour). CURVES: the island, desk and ceiling is curved to create a more natural flow. A raised drink counter in Sapele allows for “bellying up to the bar” CIRCLES: the 60” table (seating for 6) is supported by a steel plate and a custom column (used also to support the end of the curved desk – not shown) ISLAND CHALLENGE: To install recessed cans and connect to the existing ducting – we dropped the ceiling 6”. The dropped ceiling curves at the end of the island to the existing ceiling height at the pantry/desk area of the kitchen. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
