This kitchen is in a newly built, dutch colonial style home. We used windows in lieu of cabinets on the sink wall to incorporate the beautiful views. Counters are a honed black granite. The arch ceiling was done in a stained breadboard to continue the ceiling of the porches on either side of the kitchen. The floor is a quarter sawn oak. The industrial pipe fixture will be fitted with elongated edison bulbs.

This beautiful rural home is a total refurbishment of a derelict granary and piggery, and following a recommendation from a previous customer of ours, this client came to us to help them create a country kitchen with both traditional and contemporary elements. To achieve the quality and detail required for this kitchen, we designed a traditional in-frame shaker kitchen and had it handmade here in Sussex. It is entirely handmade in veneered oak with solid oak drawer boxes. The kitchen is painted in Soft Olive, a timeless green and the perfect colour scheme for a country kitchen. It works beautifully with the oak accents and granite worktops. The design did start out with a two-tone colour scheme, but with so much space and natural light in this room, we advised using the rich green across all the furniture and that the dimensions and style of the room could take the colour without being too dominated by it. For the worktops and window sills, the client wanted something light but not quartz, so they chose a granite stone in Valley White from Sussex Stone & Ceramic, a beautifully patterned stone that works so well in this scheme. Aged metals work beautifully in more traditional style kitchens, and the American Copper knurled handles and knobs by Crofts and Assinder are the perfect choices here, especially coupled with the brass hinges on the in-frame doors.

However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Wall or ceiling racks could be a useful solution for hanging pans and pots if you’ve run out of cupboards in which to store them. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
