SOMETIMES, A CLASSIC DESIGN IS ALL YOU NEED FOR AN OPEN-PLAN SPACE THAT WORKS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. This client wanted to extend their existing space to create an open plan kitchen where the whole family could spend time together. To meet this brief, we used the beautiful Shelford from our British kitchen range, with shaker doors in Inkwell Blue and Light Grey. The stunning kitchen island added the wow factor to this design, where the sink was located and also some beautiful oak shelving to house books and accessories. We used quartz composite worktops in Ice Branco throughout, Blanco sink and taps, and completed the space with AEG built-in and integrated appliances. We also created a functional utility room, which complemented the main kitchen design.

We chose a flat, matt laminate door in a pale grey with matching grey cabinets. The tall larders surround the American Style fridge freezer, housing all food storage at one end of the kitchen. The main worksurfaces with the large sink, Quooker Flex boiling tap, dishwasher and pull out bins, provide ample space for food preparation and the open shelf above keeps all essential accessories easily accessible. Tall cabinets at the end, housing the single ovens and multipurpose storage, balance the overall look in the room without being overpowering so near the dining area. The island is that central hub with bar stool seating, allowing for comfortable conversation while the meal is being prepared or a quick snack. Plenty of deep drawer storage below for all pots, pans and cutlery keep them in that central zone. The beautiful, veined quartz worksurfaces, including book matched end panels on the island, bring that touch of luxury and detail which compliments the grey green paint used on the accent wall. After living in their grade II listed country house for over 3 years, Greg and Karen felt that the size of their kitchen was disproportionate to the rest of the property. Greg commented, “We liked the existing Aga and mantel set-up, but the room was just too small for the house and needed to be updated.” With that in mind, they got in touch with Davonport to help design their dream country kitchen extension. Set in four-acre grounds with six bedrooms and five reception rooms, the kitchen in the stunning, heavily-timbered property was very compact and isolated from the rest of the home, with no space for formal dining. Taking the decision to extend the space by more than half again, the couple created room for a spacious kitchen-diner, overlooking their landscaped gardens. Retaining the existing Aga range oven and mantel was a top priority. The brief was to create a classic style kitchen incorporating a formal area for dining and entertaining guests, including modern appliances to use when the Aga was inactive. Davonport Tillingham style cabinets with curved pilasters were chosen because of their timeless style and appeal. They were hand-painted in soft neutrals (Farrow and Ball’s Pointing and Green Smoke), topped with an opulent black granite worktop, and finished with polished nickel handles to complete the classic look. Split into three main zones for cooking, dining, and entertaining, the new room is spacious and airy, reflecting the generous proportions of the rest of the property. In fact, to look at it, you would think it was part of the original property. A generous rectangular island with breakfast bar frames the kitchen area, providing ample space for food prep and informal seating for two. The new extension also accommodates a large table for formal dining, which is positioned at the end of the room, benefiting from a range of views of the property’s picturesque gardens.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area. If you find that you don’t utilise the back of your cupboards (maybe they become the graveyard for out-of-date tin cans), you could decide to go with shallower kitchen units to free up some extra floor space in front of your cabinets. However, if you have the capacity for it, cupboards and kitchen units that maximise the floor-to-ceiling space you have will mean you can use all of that for valuable kitchen storage. Wall or ceiling racks could be a useful solution for hanging pans and pots if you’ve run out of cupboards in which to store them. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
