Could you let me know which company created the desk please?

    Thanks, Claire

    Hi Claire,

This desktop was a bespoke piece finished in matte lacquer, created for the project.

It was secret fixed to the wall at either side and the back.

Study In an office space, you need to go for really good task lighting. This is where the light provides focused illumination in an area where a task needs to be carried out. A desk lamp and a secondary floor or table lamp would be adequate. You could consider putting these on a 5 amp circuit so they could be operated by the main light switch.

Fall for floating designsA floating shelf doesn’t have the visual distraction of brackets; nor is it constrained by the upright elements of a bookcase. In this home office, short ledges are easy to access and close enough to reach from a sitting position. The shelves are the same colour as the desk and are spaced evenly above it, so the worktop appears as another shelf that extends from wall to wall. Short shelves like these demand only the most important contents, and the fact they’re open-ended on one side helps deter clutter.

The home officeIf you feel the pre-festive rush left your workspace in chaos, it’s worth taking just a little time out to clear the decks before things get busy again. It will help you to get your new year off to a good start – and there are some small things you can do if time is short. Quick clear-up tipsDon’t worry so much about any decluttering, simply focus on tidying the desk surface and floor. Write a to-do list for the first couple of weeks back and number the items to indicate priority. Taking the time just to get your thoughts down on paper will help your stress levels. If you do attempt some decluttering, focus on filing. Don’t tell yourself you need to action or study in depth everything you come across just yet – too overwhelming – but if you scan-read things and get them sorted into types, it will all feel much more manageable. Put everything that needs dealing with this month in a separate pile, then longer-term projects in another one, and shred anything you no longer need to keep or are never going to action. Be honest with yourself! Finally, make sure you back up your computer if you haven’t done it for a while or don’t have an auto back-up system in place. I do this regularly. It’s quick and easy to set up and it can be working in the background as you do something else.

Stay slinkyThis home office demonstrates how a good-sized work area, storage and shelves can all be fitted neatly into a compact footprint. The trick is to keep the worktop fairly shallow and choose a ‘shelf’-style desk, rather than a freestanding design. This makes better use of space and clears the area below for drawer units. Sticking to white furniture in a white room helps reduce the visual impact of this work station, too.
