Get coastal coolCoastal style is simple and unfussy, and draws primarily on blues and whites. Step forward this staircase, a masterclass in how to get a nautical-inspired home scheme spot-on. The polished wooden floor and handrail are varnished to a yacht-like finish, while the runner is crisp and simple, with a generous navy blue and white stripe. The whole look is then surrounded by fresh white walls and stair treads. The only thing missing is the sound of seagulls wheeling overhead and waves gently lapping on the shore. Coastal perfection.

Run up the stairs A stair runner is a stylish way to incorporate stripes into your décor. The design leading up this staircase provides a striking view from the front door. Striped stair runners come in a variety of colours, so you can go for bold brights or opt for more calming neutrals. For added colour, choose a binding tape in a contrasting shade.

Work in the direction of travelWhen your home is suffering from mild neglect and you have visitors about to ring the doorbell, there’s no time for a thorough, room-by-room clean. So blitz in the direction your guests will move through your house. Start in the entrance hall and head for the living room or kitchen, depending on where you’re all likely to settle. Scoop up shoes, clear surfaces and sweep the floor in these areas first, to make a clean, beautiful entrance, and then focus your attention where it will be seen most.Discover the fast-fix way to get your home ready for entertaining

Say yes to stripesBlue and white stripes sum up the coastal vibe in seconds. And while this home might be in the middle of the capital, it still manages to exude an airy, laid-back feel reminiscent of holidays at the beach. Stick to pure white walls with contrasting rich timber floorboards and dream of days at the coast.Browse more uplifting stair runners to brighten your space

Sneak in a stair runner Pale, neutral hallways are a good bet for so many reasons: they create a calm, uncluttered calling card for your home, visually help to expand a narrow slice of square footage and bring as much airiness as possible into this often dark area. But do feel free to spice up all this white and cream with a bold, striped stair runner. And with such a neutral backdrop, you can confidently plump for any colour of carpet on the spectrum and in the busiest of prints if you so wish.Browse more uplifting stair runners
