Consider having separate appliancesAccording to Hall, choosing a separate washing machine and tumble dryer, rather than an all-in-one model, is advisable. This is because each machine is designed to do its job better than a washer-dryer, which is compromised by having to do both functions. ‘You’ll also find that washer-only machines have larger load capacities than washer-dryers,’ adds Hall, ‘and washer-dryers can only dry on average half their maximum wash load. There is also the issue of poorer reliability in the combined machine than with separates. As with all things, buy the very best you can possibly afford, to give you as much reliability as possible.’Another advantage of having a separate washing machine and dryer is that you can wash one load while drying another, making it quicker and more efficient.
Choose quality unitsThe utility room is a hugely important space in any home, where numerous essential tasks are completed, from doing the laundry to cleaning shoes and storing coats. So show it the respect it deserves and fit it with the kind of cabinets you have – or would like to have – in your kitchen. While not a budget option, the small scale of most utility rooms means using quality units should not be prohibitively expensive.TELL US...Do you have a utility room at home? ‘It must be the American in me,’ Courtney says, laughing, ‘but I really wanted a proper laundry room and not just a machine located somewhere in my kitchen. With four kids I spend so much time doing laundry, I felt like I needed a dedicated space for it.’
Choose tough flooringUtility rooms often see heavy, messy traffic – muddy boots straight from a walk, football kit waiting for a wash… So lay flooring that’s both tough and easy to clean. Slate and porcelain work well, as does durable vinyl.
