The colour: TealWhy it’s a contender: It’ll do the feature wall jobWhite walls all round in a large room can feel stark, and grey’s become a go-to as a feature wall shade to make big spaces feel more intimate. Go for teal and you can get the same effect plus more visual interest.

Paint a feature wallIf you don’t want your whole room to be painted teal, consider using it on just one wall. The expanse behind the sofa adds interest and character to this living room. A teal wall will add depth and drama to any space and it makes a fantastic foil for artwork, as this scheme demonstrates.

Swap with greyTry teal as an alternative to grey. It works in much the same way, adding colour and personality to a scheme, but with plenty of subtlety, so it’s easy to live with. You don’t need to paint it on all your walls: even a single accent wall in this shade will give a pale scheme a new sense of direction.

djr - a wall of colour gives focus. If looking through multiple doorways/walls/rooms the focal colour could become a theme or progression
