This brownstone, located in Harlem, consists of five stories which had been duplexed to create a two story rental unit and a 3 story home for the owners. The owner hired us to do a modern renovation of their home and rear garden. The garden was under utilized, barely visible from the interior and could only be accessed via a small steel stair at the rear of the second floor. We enlarged the owner’s home to include the rear third of the floor below which had walk out access to the garden. The additional square footage became a new family room connected to the living room and kitchen on the floor above via a double height space and a new sculptural stair. The rear facade was completely restructured to allow us to install a wall to wall two story window and door system within the new double height space creating a connection not only between the two floors but with the outside. The garden itself was terraced into two levels, the bottom level of which is directly accessed from the new family room space, the upper level accessed via a few stone clad steps. The upper level of the garden features a playful interplay of stone pavers with wood decking adjacent to a large seating area and a new planting bed. Wet bar cabinetry at the family room level is mirrored by an outside cabinetry/grill configuration as another way to visually tie inside to out. The second floor features the dining room, kitchen and living room in a large open space. Wall to wall builtins from the front to the rear transition from storage to dining display to kitchen; ending at an open shelf display with a fireplace feature in the base. The third floor serves as the children’s floor with two bedrooms and two ensuite baths. The fourth floor is a master suite with a large bedroom and a large bathroom bridged by a walnut clad hall that conceals a closet system and features a built in desk. The master bath consists of a tiled partition wall dividing the space to create a large walkthrough shower for two on one side and showcasing a free standing tub on the other. The house is full of custom modern details such as the recessed, lit handrail at the house’s main stair, floor to ceiling glass partitions separating the halls from the stairs and a whimsical builtin bench in the entry.

London Garden Designer
The clients of this Highgate Garden contacted London Garden Designer in Dec 2011, after seeing some of my work in House and Garden Magazine. They had recently moved into the house and were keen to have the garden ready for summer. The brief was fairly open, although one specific request was for a Garden Lodge to be used as a Gym and art room. This was something that would require planning permission so I set this in motion whilst I got on with designing the rest of the garden. The ground floor of the house opened out onto a deck that was one metre from the lawn level, and felt quite exposed to the surrounding neighbours. The garden also sloped across its width by about 1.5 m, so I needed to incorporate this into the design.

"Purple Perfect Moment" - Abstract Metal Art Sculpture
Motion is frozen in this graceful and contemporary metal sculpture, a purple ribbon that loops, twists and spirals, rising up from a gentle perch on top of its base, turning back on itself, defying gravity and time, holding itself up in an unlikely pose as it reaches for the sky. The movement of this abstract metal art piece is an idea, an illusion emphasized by the place of light off its textured metal surface.
Dimensions:
- Approximately 49"H x 15"L x 15"D including the 14" artistically textured wooden base.
- Ready to secure to a patio, deck or garden stone with the included pre-drilled mounting plate for easy installation.(Screws not included)
Color: Purple

The Summer House 2 is a significant new addition to an historic house just outside the CBD of Orange. The new works include the restoration of the existing house, new living and sleeping areas as well as new garaging and workshop areas.
The new work is arranged around a protected north-east facing landscape courtyard. The relationship between inside and outside allows the landscape courtyard to become a primary living space that is overlooked and easily accessed from all key spaces in the house. Northern light penetrates deep into the plan and windows are strategically placed to capture the favourable north easterly breezes.

We converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. A cedar soaking tub exists for year-round use, and a fire pit, outdoor shower, and dining area with fountain complete the functions. A bright tiled planter anchors an otherwise neutral space. The decking is ipe hardwood, the fence is stained cedar, and cast concrete with gravel adds texture at the fire pit. Photos copyright Laurie Black Photography.

Rustic field stone walls and weathered field stone slabs form the steps that lead from the perennial garden up to the swimming pool patio. Perennials, Roses & a few Annuals add summer color & and help to soften the hardscaping.

This garden is a transformative study of form and volume. It begins solidly in and of the earth, with strong rectangular forms arising and containing water, plantings and passage. The resulting garden feels powerful, monumental and visually compelling.
Garden and house are linked at two elevations. Space is created and maximized by the stacking of program functions. Long views are made accessible from the deck above, while visual focus is created in the main garden.

We designed this contemporary roof deck in TriBeCa, NYC with custom planters, a pergola to provide much needed shade, horizontal fencing, a stainless steel heat lamp to keep warm on cool nights, and metal-trimmed furniture. For the custom-built wood elements in this garden, we used an opaque tan paint. The benefit to using a solid paint color instead of a stain is that it doesn't have to be re-applied every year, and it helps preserve the wood for much longer.
