Small rear garden in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Gabion cages filled with Purbeck stone were used for the retaining walls which create height and interest. The original pond with the Acer growing over the top was retained, raised slightly and re-lined with fibreglass. A circular path creates movement around the garden which is divided in half with the rear half being devoted to growing a vegetables.
A powder coated aluminium pergola adds sculptural dimension, height and interest.
The raised vegetable beds were created from Oak railway sleepers.
Many plants were retained and re-homed.

Our client in Annandale had always had a green thumb. He loved his plants and had an extensive collection of pots and plants already in the small courtyard garden.
It was only the courtyard itself that wasn’t working as it was dominated by a large wall cutting the space practically in half. It was also fairly dull and impractical.
The brief as you might imagine was to not only create large planting areas but also have room for an entertaining space and a large water feature and green wall. The key was to keep it simple.
We changed the flooring to a beautiful modular slate and created an in-built seat with raised garden bed packed full of plants.
The in-built seating really helped to maximise the space and also provides a great focal point.
The water feature provides that soothing quality of running water and is also stocked full of fish.
There is also still plenty of room for the pots and the garden can comfortably be called a green oasis from every angle.
This garden design project was a real pleasure to work on and it certainly proves the old adage that size doesn’t matter.

The images of this garden show a very detailed work of Japanese techniques. This is a classic tsuboniwa except for the input deck, and fence it was decided to make them a more modern touch, but with classical aspects of Japanese gardening.
When raised the idea, we find some problems to solve. The first was the entrance who divided the garden in the middle and the second one a large slope in the right side.
The first solution was to create an entry in style wooden walkway, that had performed zigzag dynamism and greater width to be able to move comfortably. The second solution to the steep slope, was divided in half space with a rock wall also placed Japanese style. This created a karesansui style area . Rocks were used, weighing approximately 300-500 kg each.
Access to the rear is through a nobedan (Japanese style stone way). As we walk among the ancient oaks that exist on the property, we got to the separation of the rear. Here a fence that has a door in Japanese style developed in our carpentry was created.
In the pond area, we decided to create a space where you can sit and enjoy the garden.
Undoubtedly the transformation undergone this garden has been amazing and very laborious.

This very small garden had a huge brief; somewhere to entertain, create a workshop in the shed, somewhere to paddle (without chemicals), to encourage wildlife (including provide a home for the frogs and toads already there), built in seating with enough space for either a fire pit or a table, benches wide enough to sunbathe on and a canopy to provide shade on a hot day.
By removing the dilapidated conservatory and coal hole, all these things were achieved - as well as creating space for a BBQ, smaller storage shed and enough lawn to put a 6' trampoline up. The pool is part of the raised bed and there is space to sit and dangle your feet in, this is cleaned by a lower pond with reed bed, this doubles up as a home for the frogs! This is a tiny space that does a lot and feels far bigger than it actually is - only about 9 x 9m.
