Rearrange your furnitureDuring the winter months we tend to huddle indoors around the fire or the TV. As spring approaches, change things around a little and move some seating near the windows. This will allow you to enjoy views of the new leaves and flowers as they emerge. Think about how each piece of furniture adds to your use of the room. If anything doesn’t fulfil its intended purpose, you could find a better place for it, or consider recycling or selling it on.

The couple had the home extended before moving in. ‘We got rid of the nasty lean-to, and had the old kitchen area rebuilt and extended, with bifold doors onto the garden. In summer the doors just disappear, it’s wonderful,’ says Denny. She had her sofa re-covered in white linen. ‘If you have decent furniture, just have it re-covered,’ she advises. ‘It gets squishier and lovelier as time goes on and you become fonder and fonder of it.’ She made all of the cushions herself, to make sure they were unique. ‘I like it that no one has the same designs,’ she explains.Curtain fabric, John Lewis.
