Rearrange your furnitureDuring the winter months we tend to huddle indoors around the fire or the TV. As spring approaches, change things around a little and move some seating near the windows. This will allow you to enjoy views of the new leaves and flowers as they emerge. Think about how each piece of furniture adds to your use of the room. If anything doesn’t fulfil its intended purpose, you could find a better place for it, or consider recycling or selling it on.

CountryModern isn’t for everyone, nor should it be. If your interiors taste leans towards the cottagey, follow through with a country-style sofa. The fashion in modern sofas has been to expose legs for a greater sense of space but here, pleated valances give a cosy, traditional feel. The plump cushions mean it’s very much a place to relax with a nice cup of tea (scones optional).

The living room is at the back of the house where the kitchen used to be. The couple had the home extended before moving in. ‘We got rid of the nasty lean-to, and had the old kitchen area rebuilt and extended, with bifold doors onto the garden. In summer the doors just disappear, it’s wonderful,’ says Denny. She had her sofa re-covered in white linen. ‘If you have decent furniture, just have it re-covered,’ she advises. ‘It gets squishier and lovelier as time goes on and you become fonder and fonder of it.’ She made all of the cushions herself, to make sure they were unique. ‘I like it that no one has the same designs,’ she explains.Curtain fabric, John Lewis. I like the stack back and the door with a fixed pane next to it. More light!
