SCAL created a beautiful and comfortable screened-in and illuminated back porch for us and our guests to enjoy one another and our outstanding view of the trees and the ravine behind our house. And we can use the space almost year round, thanks to overhead heaters and fans. They took care of everything, from design to implementation and permitting, so we had a worry-free project. The craftspeople they hired and oversaw were on time and friendly and at the top of their expertise. SCAL listened to what we wanted, a covered porch that still allowed us to look up at the sky. They are good and kind and resourceful folk whose work created something better than we had imagined!

SCAL designed and built an addition and renovated our kitchen. We could not be happier. SCAL gave us the most detailed quote of all the firms we interviewed. Along the way, they did not surprise us. There was an unsuspected structural matter that arose but the project manager, Michael, was dogged in finding the least expensive solution. The landscape architect they recommended for the extensive drainage work required was excellent. The design was exactly what we hoped for. Amanda listened carefully to our vision and helped improve it. Michael worked well with us when we wanted to do something extra, talking through options. Overall, the entire team was excellent, clear, responsive, creative and flexible. We highly recommend SCAL .

After buying an old house that hadn't been thoughtfully remodeled or updated over the years SCAL came in and helped us fix a very odd roof, created a screened porch from an existing breezeway, added central air to areas not previously serviceable, removed walls, refinished floors seamlessly, and created an incredible indoor/outdoor living area. The space is amazing. Beyond just the craftsmanship, the team was incredible. Very communicative throughout the entire process and incredibly professional. They hold all of their employees and subcontractors to a high level and all the details came out perfectly. I highly recommend for any home renovation!

I'll be the first to admit that we had NO idea what we were doing when we started looking to do an addition on our home. We just knew our little house needed more space since we would now be working from home. We sort of knew our budget and we sort of knew how we wanted our home to function. Enter SCAL. Of the 3 contractors we talked to, SCAL was far and away the best. The design/build aspect of their work was most appealing to us since we knew everything we needed - from plans to permits to construction - was coordinated from one team. Their process was clearly laid out from our first conversation and communication stayed constant during the project. We always knew where we were in the process and what to expect next. They stuck to our budget and timeline, despite the ongoing pandemic chaos, and now we have an even more beautiful home with space to work, live, and play!

SCAL recently completed a full kitchen renovation for us in Morningside, including a refresh to the adjacent family room. The ownership team has a great deal of experience together, and they bring a wealth of knowledge to the table. We changed up our entire kitchen layout with new placement of appliances, which was a bit of a challenge working in a vintage 1933 home. SCAL found a wat to make it all work to our design plan. Communication is key! Both the owners and our Project Manager kept us up to date weekly, and more often as needed. Road blocks were addressed quickly and smoothly. It's clear they believe in their trade. SCAL gets our endorsement!

Small Carpenters did a large project for us, adding a second story to our 1905 bungalow and remodeling several spaces on the ground floor, including the kitchen. Working with Amanda, Justin and Theresa is a pleasure. They are extremely professional, and at the same time, unfailingly friendly. Communication is outstanding. They came almost every day over the course of our project and, if they didn’t come, we knew why, and when they’d return. All of the subs they used were professional and respectful. They are not the cheapest, but you absolutely get what you pay for. The workmanship is excellent. In addition to creating wonderful new areas in our home, the beauty of the old now shines out more prominently where the old meets the new. Amanda’s architectural/design skills allowed her to add a staircase that, rather than an object that takes space away, somehow manages to make the entire area more interesting. They remain responsive after the job is done. We have called them twice for minor things since our renovation was completed 1.5 years ago, and each time they responded immediately and addressed our issue.

We have had the best possible experience with Justin, Amanda and Theresa at Small Carpenters. They helped make our home renovation exactly what we wanted, and as seamless as possible at the same time. Even after our renovation was complete, they have come to our rescue during an emergency flood. We do not have any reservations for choosing SCaL for our future project needs!

The team at Small Carpenters at Large provided great customer service. They were always very responsive to questions or concerns and had a "make it right" approach. We were pleased to work with a local business who are connected to the community. They brought the functionality of our house up to date without it losing the bungalow charm that made us pick our neighborhood and house 15 years ago.

Our old kitchen (renovated in 1980) was a good, efficient kitchen in our 1903 home. Just worn out, basically. We hired SCAL to update the kitchen and we could not be more pleased with the result. The construction phase was as painless as it could possibly be, completed ahead of schedule and the quality (and likability) of their subcontractors was superior. And the design was perfect. No surprises, just great work. We love it!

We hired this company to convert a kitchen closet space to a wet bar and also to redo floor tile, sinks and countertops in three bathrooms. The design work for the bar was tricky given the space but SCAL devised a clever plan that made use of the limited space. Our wish for a zinc countertop was challenging but a local supplier was located. The subcontractors hired were very professional and the project manager kept us informed daily about the process, problems or decisions needed. Working areas were kept reasonably clear and considerations were made for our comfort during the renovations. One of the most appreciated aspects of working with SCAL was their dedication to our satisfaction. It was clear, this was a high priority for the team. And much appreciated. We hired Small Carpenters At Large for our kitchen renovation project. This was our fourth renovation with SCAL. We had previously used them for a darkroom, a laundry room/sewing room, and exterior repairs. As we had worked with them before, we knew what to expect, but even so, they managed to exceed my expectations. Small Carpenters At Large's work was on budget and on time. They said 3 months and the kitchen was completed in 3 months (almost to the day!). And thanks to the very thorough pricing done before the renovation began, the final cost of the kitchen was exactly what we thought it would be. Working with Amanda Johnson, SCAL's designer is an absolute dream. Not only are her ideas very creative, but her demeanor is steady and easy going. She is a wonderful communicator, so I felt very informed all the way through the process and there were no surprises. As with most renovations, there are a few bumps and we had a couple of them. Our drawers came with panels that we did not expect and the crown molding on the cabinetry was different than what we discussed. All I needed to do was email Amanda. She was at our house almost immediately. The cabinet makers came that day to take the wrong pieces and replacements were made in a timely manner. All of this was done with efficiency and without drama. Our project manager Steve Schuchardt did a beautiful job of keeping all the subs on track. He was always available if we needed him and he's the kind of guy that you don't mind having in your home for 3 months. He's always respectful and pleasant. Now that the kitchen is finished, I have to say that I am overjoyed with the result. First of all, the design is impeccable. I had hoped that the kitchen would function better, but cooking and cleaning is even easier than I thought it would be. Amanda did an incredible job of giving us the storage we need, so that everything has it's place. The placement of the appliances and cabinetry makes cooking an effortless experience. Considering that Amanda was working with a smaller space than most modern kitchens and that our budget required using the existing footprint, this was no small task. Our cabinetry is very high quality, and I'm thrilled with the way the tile backsplash and countertops all came together. My friends have repeatedly said, "It's just so PRETTY!". It's something pretty that also works really well. Hopefully we are done renovating for awhile, but when the next project arises, there is no doubt who we will be hiring. Small Carpenters At Large are our team, for sure.

Small Carpenters at Large, Inc. did an outstanding kitchen/butler's pantry renovation for us. Everyone involved in the renovation was top notch. The project was well organized and executed. There was great attention to detail and always a quick response if a problem came up. We lived in our house during the renovation, and Small Carpenters at Large went to great lengths to minimize their impact, We knocked out an old chimney to open up space and added beautiful milled heart pine floors. It was a comprehensive job from the bottom up including foundation, floor system, mechanical system, and even a new sound system. We now have a beautiful and functional kitchen with lots of storage space. Job well done!
