I was most impressed with the initial meeting and review of our current rotting deck. Ted clearly has been doing decks for a long time as he drew up the existing deck to scale with-in minutes, calculated materials, and provided an estimate for replacing the deck. Ted and his Deckwerks crew are professional, responsive, timely, detail oriented, hardworking and extremely talented craftsmen. We took a leap with undergoing a multi-level composite deck, and the end product exceeded our expectations. Every step went well with them from the first phone conversation with the company to meeting Ted (we noticed his talent was clear when he started sketching the design and identifying the technical aspects), then through the construction process and completion. We had not realized how much goes into making a solid, well-constructed deck. The head crewman, Leo, patiently explained the steps throughout the process without prompting. He is a skilled craftsman. The attention to detail was noteworthy. Our new decks are seamless and beautifully constructed, the work site was neatly maintained, and the crew was professional and friendly.

We hired Ted and his team to renovate the porch on our 100+ year old Victorian home. They did a fantastic job and I would highly recommend them to anyone considering them for a job. After I contacted Ted he quickly came out to my home to look at my yard. I had a general idea of a deck shape, but I could not envision how to put a deck in a yard that slopes down to my house. No worries though, Ted pulled out his pad of paper and started drawing a design based on my general idea. The skill he showed and the granularity with which he drew out the proposed deck was incredible! I was sold at that point. Although starting the deck project was slowed by Covid-19, Ted made sure to keep me updated throughout. The quality of his crew and the quality of the materials used were A+++!! From design, removal of old decking, additional concrete footings and support beams, as well as an entirely new cedar deck and railings with metal ballusters, our experience with Deckwerks was excellent. Pricing was fair in relation to two other written quotes we obtained before engaging Deckwerks as our contractor. They advised that an electrician would be required to repair and/or replace existing above-ground electrical and install LED lighting transformer and deck lights, and we hired one. All in all, superb and beautiful job, wonderful people who were knowledgeable and easy to work with. We will certainly choose Deckwerks for all future decking related work.

As a homeowner for 35 years, I have come to dislike having to hire contractors. Most often I end up disappointed — in the poor communications or lack of it which leads to misunderstandings; a level of work that doesn't meet my expectations, and high project costs for level of work performed. In sharp contrast to my experience, Ted Benson and his DECKWERKS carpenters Leo and Antonio were absolutely great to work with. I needed a 21 year old 400sqft custom cedar deck rebuilt with extra modifications, in addition to resetting a slate bluestone patio. Ted's easy-going, yet proactive, attentive manner was complemented by his skillful expertise. He sketched my ideas and shared his as we met to come to a mutual understanding. He was not put off by the custom work and details I preferred. Other contractors that came out to bid on the job wanted to build a deck similar to what I had but with their shortcut, less skillful methods and details which would did not satisfy my wishes. So while Ted's pricing was just a bit more than the other's, I got built what I wanted. Ted is flexible, negotiable and reasonable on many levels. The two man construction crew on my job was not only talented and hard working, Leo, the lead carpenter also was so easy to talk to. When compared to other professionals I have hired in the past who seem to avoid communicating with homeowners, Leo always sought me out to ask about, suggest or clarify things. This gave me great peace of mind that everybody understood each other. During the job we made some change orders and added some additional work. The Deckwerks team was friendly, and professional to a fault. The experience and outcome has me entirely satisfied.

My wife and I have hired Ted Benson, owner of Deckwerks, Inc., to do carpentry work at our Winnetka home on a number of occasions over the last 20 years. Each time that Ted and his crew worked for us, we were more than satisfied with the finished product. Our most recent project, our new Trex deck, is a thing of beauty which we will enjoy for many, many years to come. Ted is truly a master carpenter. He is easy to work with and delivers high quality work in a timely manner.

I needed Low to No maintenance, Ted built this two level beauty using Trex in 1995, and it's still solid, looks perfect!

To say we had an excellent experience with Deckwerks would be an understatement. First off- the site of the deck at our home in Riverwoods was especially challenging - with low-lying areas, significant elevation differences and multiple tree roots (we did not want to cut down 3 large trees in the area, but build around them). So much so, that many other contractors either quoted a price that was 50-60% higher than Deckwerks, or just went silent after the initial conversation. One contractor (will not name them here), signed a contract and THEN went silent... I found Ted Benson (Decwerks) shortly after. The first thing that strikes you about Ted that he's incredibly knowledgeable (decades of experience) but also down to earth and extremely collaborative. Throughout the whole process of the initial design, Ted really listened and crafted the design to get close to my vision, while patiently explaining the technical aspects and the challenges that would require tweaks to my design. Each design tradeoff was well explained with pros and cons to each option, so I had full confidence in the design choices I made. The whole situation was further complicated when we ripped out the old deck (that covered part of site for the new deck) and discovered ANOTHER rotted deck underneath. This put a whole new spin on the elevation changes and drainage issues we would have to deal with to put the new deck in place. Again, Ted patiently worked with me to modify the design - yet keep costs in the same ballpark as what we started with. A side note on this part of the experience - most of my career has been as a strategy consultant at a leading firm, so I'm used to interacting with experts, and part of my brain always expects a high degree of performance (and hence my frustration with many contractors) - Ted meets all my high expectations when collaborating with an expert. He never talks down to you or tries to push his ideas on to you, maintains his sense of dry humor to lighten the conversation, and really gives you the benefit of his expertise as YOU shape your vision for your outdoor living space. Now we get to the actual build part of the equation. Ted's crew (Lee and Fred) are AMAZING. I don't think I've met a set of builders like them who take pride in their work, have incredible attention to detail, produce high quality work - all while being able to hold a friendly conversation on geometry and philosophy and getting to be best friends with your 4 year old. I'd often find my parents stepping out in the afternoon to have a conversation on world religion with Fred, or my 4 year old son giving a "rock on" sign to Lee as they walked in on the job site before 7 each morning. My son insisted on getting cup-cake for Ted for his birthday - that's how well they integrated into our family environment. Amazing. It didn't feel like we had a contractor crew out - it felt like we had some good friends out helping build our deck! I could go on and on- but you get the idea :) Right now, my son is asking when we can have Ted, Fred and Lee out to grill with us on the new deck - so I'll leave with one last thought -- Deckwerks is not going to be your cheapest option when you build a deck - and that's because they're experts, and in this case you pay for their expertise, and its totally worth it. But if you want a partner to help shape your vision for your outside living area, and then deliver per plan - give Ted Benson a call.

This was our second experience with Deckwerks and once again it was wholly positive. Deckwerks had installed our front porch some twelve years ago, based on a back-of-the envelope sketch my wife had done, and we love it. Everyone says it looks like it was original with the house. And now, we had to make some required repairs to our back deck due to storm damage. Deckwerks made the repairs quickly, came in under budget, and made the deck look better than ever.

Deckwerks did a fantastic job! Because I had a relatively small project, I was having a hard time finding a contractor that would even respond to me. Not only did Deckwerks reply quickly, they were reliable, timely and did quality work. My job was simple, install a gate on my deck so my dogs would be safe. Ted and Lee went above and behind making sure I was satisfied with the work and made sure to leave the job site clean. I would hire them again for my next project.

Great, positive experience with Deckwerks. Bids were taken from 4 companies - we were fortunate to have Deckwerks in the choices. We did not understand the amount of finish-level carpentry that would be shown in our deck, or the individual care for many parts of the build. The unknown factors that distinguish a pro company are hard to convey in the beginning processes of choosing a design and a contractor, I am happy that it felt "right" before we made the choice. This is our first experience with a deck build (replacement) and first with Deckwerks.

Ted and his crew have built a front porch and stairs for us when we lived in Chicago and just repaired the rotting bases of three columns, a railing and post on our large porch in Evanston. The two-man crew worked diligently but quickly and there was nothing to clean up afterward. They even improvised a bit with one of the new bases to straighten a column and that wasn't even part of the bid. High quality in every way.

During our warm, then cold, then raining and then snow of February 2017, the Deckwerks crew completely stripped my old deck, supported some posts, and replaced all the cedar decking, rails, posts and bench. They duplicated the design along with upgrades and duplicated the complicated bench that I originally had built. They used coated screws on the whole job. I also had animal abatement screening installed to keep the critters out from under the deck. They did a great job and I would recommend them.

Many others wanted to put square corners on our deck which was not in keeping with the design drawn up by our landscape architect. I found them to be on time and on budget. We retained Deckwerks to rebuild our exterior deck and were very happy with their work. A painting contractor with whom we have worked for many years recommended Deckwerks, and the recommendation was justified. They made some fine-tuning improvements to the design and construction of the original deck, were very timely, and the crew was a delight to work with. The new deck looks gorgeous, and the city inspector, after doing his final review and approving the work, commented to me that "this is really high quality work!" As I did not obtain other quotes, I cannot comment specifically on cost. However, I have read some reviews of Deckwerks that note that, while their price may be somewhat higher than the norm, the quality of the work merits the difference. I would certainly not quarrel with that observation.

We were very pleased with how our deck turned out, both the design and the quality of the workmanship and the materials. Deckwerks completed the job on schedule and kept us well-informed on what they were doing. The crew was always courteous and cleaned up the work area each day. They were flexible and able to accommodate mid-stream requests such as a matching cabinet. They also exercised great care in sinking piers to avoid tree roots. We would hire Deckwerks again.

They did a great job - they built a beautiful deck very fast, did the drawings, and got the permit fast. The whole neighborhood is admiring the deck. Great personal service. I recommend them highly. They also stained it and made some changes to my initial ideas that I would not have thought of. They used metal in the railings which made a big difference. Deckwerks had 2-3 options on what to do with my deck and was able to quickly draw the options. Deckwerks delivered exactly what was promised and the workers were on time and respectful. Deck was completed in one week and has been easy to maintain for the past 15 years. Once a year we use Dish washing liquid and hose it down. It looks great with very little maintenance. Whenever we entertain we get complimented on how great it looks. I would hire these guys again in a heartbeat.

Ted Benson designed a beautiful and wonderfully functional screened in cedar porch and deck. The craftsmanship in construction of our deck and porch is also outstanding. They created an entrance to the porch by breaking out our dining room window and created a sliding glass door that looks beautiful from both the dining room and porch. After 11 years, the wood in the outside deck had rotted (very shady and moist location. They just replaced the deck and stripped / stained the inside floor to match the new wood beautifully. Ted's construction crew members are skilled, pleasant to work with, reliable, and and clean up their construction mess nicely. Ted is an affable guy, pleasant and easy to work with. We practically live in our screened porch spring and summer! It was worth every penny.
