About Us

Elizabeth Coombs is the principal designer and founder of Modern Antiquity, an interior design firm that blends the classic and timeless elements of design with the new. The firm specializes in residential interiors and provides luxury, full-service design with attention to every detail. As a graduate of Mississippi State University’s College of Architecture, Art, & Design, Elizabeth brings a comprehensive knowledge of interior architecture and art to her design work. She is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and is certified by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, giving her the ability to design not just beautiful interiors, but practical and safe interiors as well. Elizabeth's work has been featured in numerous publications and she has received Best of Houzz Awards every year since 2013. Elizabeth recognizes that no two clients are ever alike, and each design is customized to fit the personal aesthetic, style, and needs of that particular home. These characteristics, coupled with her design experience working in some of the most desirable communities in the Washington, DC and Atlanta areas has given Elizabeth an extensive background that allows her to create graceful yet highly functional interiors.

I began working with Elizabeth about eight months ago to address the first level of our 1970s home. Elizabeth has a keen eye for detail ---- not just as it pertains to selecting fixtures, furniture and fabrics ---- but regarding the whole picture from the right wall colors and coverings to adding special molding and accessories where it will make a big difference. She began our project by asking me what my favorite colors are, what our budget was and what sort of "look" we were trying to capture. From that moment on, she succeeded in providing a final product which includes the preferred colors, beautiful furnishings everything within our budget. Besides the fact that Elizabeth is a total professional in terms of billing and execution, she is also a complete delight to work with. She always arrives with a smile on her face and interacts in a polished manner with all contractors making sure that they deliver what they promise and on-time. There is no doubt in my or my husband's mind that we will be using Elizabeth's Modern Antiquity business to redo our upstairs and our Arlington, Virginia apartment. Five-plus stars.

We can't say enough about how well Elizabeth Coombs of Modern Antiquity designed our remodel of our kitchen and sunroom! This all began with an email and phone call consultation.. From the beginning, she was so professional and knowledgeable about all aspects of kitchen design and trends. Her communication skills proved to be outstanding as she helped us to find out what we needed and wanted and then turned those ideas into a functional design. Because we live about 900 miles apart, we used Modern Antiquity's e-Design service where all layout designs are sent through email first for approval and then by mail. We were thrilled when our e-Design book and DVD arrived in a few weeks complete with photos, floor plans, elevations, furniture and furnishing selections, a shopping guide, and even a detailed pricing guide to keep us on budget. Any questions that we or our contractor had were always answered quickly either by email or a phone call. With Mrs. Coombs direction and solid knowledge, our kitchen and sunroom are in the process of becoming beautiful! We highly recommend Modern Antiquity with no reservations.

Elizabeth did a wonderful job furnishing our house! She listened and immediately got our aesthetic and style. She was patient and easy to work with and is now designing some wine storage for us. We couldn't be happier with the outcome.

Modern Antiquity completely transformed our master bath to create improved flow, storage, and overall usability. The new design provided a beautiful soaking tub, custom cabinetry, travertine floors and a beautiful stone shower. Mrs. Coombs was able to incorporate all of our wishes into this renovation and we are very pleased with the finished product.

This company designed a pergola top for my patio which is approximately 30 feet wide and 50 feet long and also chose furniture to complete the look. I was well pleased with the outcome and look forward to doing more business with Modern Antiquity.
