HK ASSOCIATES

This is the first house project we have been involved with. It was a completely positive, pleasant and professional experience from inception to completion. The finished house design is testimony to the architect's abilities to recognize our desires. The floor plan, choice of contractor, fixtures, and materials have made life wonderful for us and our cats. I would unconditionally recommend HK Assocites.

I can not speak highly enough of this dynamic duo! They have worked on several projects for me and I plan on having them work on several more, in the near future. Their creativity and attention to detail is impeccable. Additionally, their oversight once the project has begun far surpasses any other architect/designer that I have ever worked with. This involvement and thoroughness ensures a beautiful design and finished product.

Our project was a single-family house in the Barrio Viejo section of Tucson AZ. This is a historic district that requires compliance with significant design requirements. While wanting to reference the AZ building heritage, especially those features that relate functionally to the climate and topography, we did not want to simply imitate historic design features. We were looking for a modern creative interpretation of the Barrio aesthetic. We also had a restricted budget, planned to work with relatives on construction and wanted to make it sympathetic to green ideals within cost limitations. Kathy Hancox and Mike Kothke, The HK Associates Principals, took our input and developed a concept that at first sight appeared different from what we had envisioned but at the same time was exactly what we had imagined -without knowing it. They created a concept that we instantly recognized as “our house” – including an ingenious periscope that bought mountain views into the living space. The design phase of the project spanned a period of several years before we were ready to begin building during which there was ongoing exploration, examination and discussion regarding every aspect of the design, but while the concept certainly evolved it always stayed close and true to that original vision and at the end of the process the important project requests were all there – only more fully realized. The actual construction period was compressed for a custom home, seven months from the time we broke ground and Kathy and Mike fully supported the ambitions schedule being on site to trouble shoot and facilitate inspections. They were also helpful in brainstorming cost reductions as needed. We love living in the house and it has received national & international recognition e.g. The American Association of Architects custom home of the year. Award in 2012, as well as being featured on HGTV. To this day we are friends with our architects and regularly enjoy drinks around the pool where we admire the results of our successful collaboration.

We have worked with HK Associates for 3 projects as we remodel our 1970's adobe. We simply love living in the spaces they create. They are clean, uncluttered, fresh , and modern. This is such a wonderful thing when you are raising 3 young children. Our guests to our home always compliment us on our style and I am quick to credit our talented architects!

I've had the privilege of working with HK Associates on three projects. They are simply the best at what they do!
