About Us

Joan Robinson-Whitaker, ASID Is an award-winning interior designer with over 25 years experience in both residential and commercial design. Joan has always been active in the local community. A consummate professional, her work has received numerous awards and has been published in Honolulu Magazine, Hawaii Home and Remodeling, Island Home, and TV news-set make over for KHON. Before co-founding Designer for a Day in 2008, Joan worked for: Bank of Hawaii and Leo A. Daly -Interiors Project Designer Castle Design Group -Director of Interior Design -Responsible for full service interior design, including purchasing for Castle Resorts & Hotels Continued to be a partnership with her architect husband, John, in Robinson-Whitaker Design. Education: Joan is a longtime local of Hawaii, graduating from Kalani High School. Joan received her Interior Design degree from the University of California, which included two years of study at the well-respected American College of Lucerne, Switzerland. After completing her education and the proscribed years of experience in the field, she was eligible to sit for the rigorous national NCIDQ exam, qualifying her to become a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

I have worked with Joan for more than 8 years for a good number of remodel projects. Each work was very different in style and motif not just repetitive with different colors. Joan is very skilled with mixing and matching colors, textures, and looks. I supply custom cabinetry for several of her client's homes and condos following her lead and Joan will always add unique features to personalize the final product to represent her client's vision.

We asked Joan to be our interior decorator / project manager after we purchased our condo and while we were still living in Singapore. As our project manager, she coordinated our requests for the renovation of our condo with the general contractor. Joan is a true professional. . .she is knowledgeable, easy to work with, accommodating (esp. with our numerous requests and changes), hard-working, and budget-conscious. Our renovation project included: completely new marble master bathroom, replacement of carpeting, new kitchen appliances, new closet systems, installation of new shutters in all rooms, new granite kitchen countertops with sink, and painting throughout. Once the renovation was completed, she assisted us with the layout of our furniture and decorative items, including her hands-on service of hanging our paintings/wall hangings! We trusted Joan in ensuring that our new home would be special and she was instrumental in doing so. We highly recommend Designer for a Day. Thank you, Joan

Her initial consult was so invaluable and priceless and her continuing assistance, care, and helpfulness is bar none the best out there. She has incredible design sense and taste and is very considerate when you are trying to work on a budget. Her contacts alone have saved me thousands. Her willingness to let me do some leg work and converse via email in a very prompt and timely manner is so incredibly helpful. I've only begun and can't wait for the final remodel of my two bathrooms!

As a building / renovation contractor in Hawaii I work with quite a few designers and homeowners in the process of restoring a home to a beautiful new state. When working with Joan of "Designer for a Day" most of the hard work is already done for me. She provides the complete package of designing if that is whats called for. I like to have the materials not only specified but also ordered so things are either in route or on the job site already. The homeowner has already been enlightened as to the necessary steps that need to be taken by all those involved. My job is made easier because all I have to do is create what has been designed, install what has been called for, create what has been drawn. Joan is the link that makes the homeowners dreams turn into the reality the contractor is able to build.

Joan helped me furnish and accessorize my entire newly constructed condo in Kailua, Hawaii. We worked long distance on the project. I live in Austin, Texas. Joan understood my vision and executed it beautifully. She found the main piece of art that was the inspiration for the project. The project was completed on time and turned out better than I anticipated. I love her personality. She was patient and calming when I was stressed. I look forward to working with Joan again.

Joan at Designer for a Day is a true treasure whether you are considering a redesign of a room or a remodel. She helped us with a beautiful redesign of a cottage space recommending the flooring type and furniture considerations. She helped me with another project to create a yoga room which involved new lighting with dimmers, paint selections and wall decorations. I love her work so much I recently hired her to help me give my kitchen a facelift within a tight budget. She has given me great design ideas and recommended the best vendors or sub-contractors for countertop material, wall coverings and cabinet refinishing. The project is underway as I write this but I am already very happy with the first results. Joan is easy to work with and comes up with ideas I could never of dreamed of on my own. Her eye for style, comfort and utility are amazing. I highly recommend this business for all your redesign or remodel projects, you will be more than pleased with the results as I was.

I have known Joan Robinson Whittaker for Years! Her design work is a constant inspiration to all of her piers. I am one of them. She is so innovative and insightful into décor. She has a natural feel for what will transform an environment into the perfect living or working place for her individual clients. She is not a "cookie cutter"designer. Joan Robinson-Whitaker has been helping me with the interior design of my home. Before the holidays, we started with the 2 guest bedrooms. When we sat down for the first time to discuss my vision of the type of rooms I wanted to have, Joan has since been spot on in selecting the furnishings and accessories for the bedrooms. She seems to know exactly what I am looking for. Joan has recently helped me with the selection of the window treatments for each room and I am just waiting for the flooring and painting to be completed before we can move on to the furniture pieces and placement. I am so looking forward to the completed interiors. It's a pleasure working with her.

I have worked with Designer for a Day on three different projects and am absolutely delighted with the results. Project #1 was redecorating my living room. I was so pleased with how things turned out that I had Designer for a Day custom design my condo kitchen. Again - wonderful experience and the results were everything I could have wanted. Project #3 was designing and redecorating my master bedroom. Designer for a Day is a joy to work with, she "got" right away what I had in mind (even when I wasn't sure what I had in mind, she somehow knew) and brought me a selection of ideas to choose from, all priced within my budget.

ART DECO TOUCHES. The finest, yet humble, and creative designer in the South Pacific, able to discern your dreams and achieve them within budget. What makes her extraordinary, is she converts your wishes into practical reality without imposing cookie cutter solutions, like others; thus your design outcomes are truly unique for your home and lifestyle. Previously, creating and completing foundational architectural designs, now with a follow-on, final touches, like drapery, have tied the "package" with a completing "bow," we did not know possible. She's a Master Project Leader, synergistically bringing out the best of the most extraordinary artists on the island, like Lauren Archer for drapery, Bob Arcus for Austrian leather upholstery and German furniture creation and Bill Grix's Art Deco glass creations.
