We hired John to do a renovation of our 19th century brownstone in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. The house was in poor condition when we got it, and basically needed to be completely rebuilt. We also added an extension and dug down the cellar. In total, the renovation cost around two million dollars and took about two years to complete. This was our first experience with a renovation and John and his staff guided us through the entire process, from schematic design to construction management. The end result is a beautiful, functional home, which fits in with the historic neighborhood but has all of the modern conveniences. We're very happy with the house and would recommend John to anyone considering a similar project.

John (and Hatheway Architects) guided us through every step of an indoor and out 3,500 sq ft gut renovation project of our second home. Not only did John help us select and purchase a two story mid-century modern, he supervised the construction rebuild contract, design, and budget process. The house had been untouched since 1959. It needed new roof, staircase, interior and exterior walls, complete re-wiring, new plumbing, HVAC installation, new bathrooms, and kitchen. Hatheway Architects also designed outdoor decks, stairs, retaining wall, shower, screened-in porch, garden, and balcony. John worked closely with us to help select the general contractor, vendors, appliances, lighting, floors, tiles, woods, counters, cabinets and finishes. I live in a 165 year old brownstone on the Brooklyn Promenade in Brooklyn Heights. This is a landmarked neighborhood with strict standards. I replaced my water-facing windows and added an HVAC split unit to avoid having as AC in one of my windows. My interpretation of the Landmarks rules was incorrect in that I did not think I needed to seek Landmarks approval for these "alterations". However, I was wrong and ended up with serious violations. I hired John Hatheway to assist me in making a case before the Landmarks Commission. John provided invaluable expertise on ways to approach getting approval from Landmarks. He meticulously prepared a thorough presentation that convinced the 14 commissioners in a public hearing, that my alterations should be legalized. I am eternally grateful to John and his staff and recommend them highly for their knowledge and professionalism.

John designed and supervised a near-complete renovation of an 1840s Brooklyn townhouse.
