About Us

McNelis Architects is a small firm that welcomes the opportunity to design a range of project types. By limiting the number of projects taken on at one time we are able to focus and be responsive in every phase of design. Every project is our most important project until it is finished. Our focus is custom residential, multi-family lowrise, and smaller scale commercial projects. We have a particular interest in adaptive reuse for its role in the conservation of resources. We can assist our clients from the early planning stages with feasibility and code studies through Architectural Design, Interior Design, Permitting and completion of construction. Since 1999, our office has been located in the commercial district of one of Seattle's larger urban neighborhoods, West Seattle, where it is easy to drop in and clients are always welcome to do so. We approach design challenges with creative enthusiasm and take pride in our one-of-a-kind designs which have been termed understated and elegant (although we are capable of making a big statement as well!).

I have had the opportunity to work with McNelis Architects as a client and as a professional. The projects have ranged from interior work to full house remodels/additions and they've been great as a team through all of the steps. Lisa is fabulous in taking a small idea and making it come to life or better yet - improving an idea! I look forward to working with McNelis Architects on future projects as well.

Lisa is terrific and a pleasure to work with. Her designs are creative and she is sensitve to budgetary constraints. She successfully and smoothly resolved an issue we had with our builder. I also hired her for a bathroom and kitchen project in 1999 and would not hesitate to hire her again.

Lisa and her team designed a 1200 sf taphouse for us. They wrangled many technical issues, including meeting health code, designing to fire code, and sleuthing the details of an 80 year old building with no as-built drawings available. They were always very responsive and respectful, and on-site meetings were a delight, with genuine brainstorming focused on our goals and limitations, even though they have dozens of ideas in their heads, and back of the envelope drawings turning into full architect drawings a day or two later. Perhaps the greatest of all was their focus on the function of the taphouse as a public space where people are encouraged to talk to friends and to strangers. Using a variety of standard heights and creative angles, they turned the pub from an empty space to the welcoming meeting place it is today. We get compliments nearly daily from regulars and newcomers about how great the taphouse looks and feels.

Lisa McNelis and team designed and efficiently navigated permitting for our complex remodel in Seattle satisfying code requirements for Shorelines, critical slope, flood plain, environmentally sensitive area mitigations, setback encroachment, street side attached garage expansion and other roadblocks to build a third story with an elevator on beach property. The cost was well within budget, communications were timely and understandable, experts they had established relationships with were available, visits to other job sites and elevators were arranged. Great Job!

We give Lisa and her crew 5 stars on every aspect of our project. She listened to what we wanted, from design ideas to budget to usability. Besides hearing what we wanted, she also was great at giving suggestions. It wasn't an easy project due to limited a footprint and city codes on increasing the footprint, but Lisa found a way. Our completed remodel was everything we had hoped it would be.

Lisa and team at McNelis Architects were a pleasure to work with! They patiently listened to what we wanted for our remodel and transformed our mid-century home from blah to wow - adding a master suite, creating an open-concept for the kitchen and living room areas as well as new window design throughout. We also updated two existing bathrooms and added a room for a future sauna. Their exceptional design process allowed us to incorporate ideas of our own, while providing the expertise and guidance that produced a fabulous result. We highly recommend McNelis Architects!

The McNelis team brought a design concept to Missoula for The Dram Shop that resulted in being voted The Best Beer Bar by Craftbeer.com two years running. The space brought a modern city feel to a historic building in the heart of downtown Missoula. We couldn't be happier with our experience overall or recommend them enough! Hiring McNelis Architects to assist us in a "tricky" project was the difference between success and failure to my mind. We wished to get a curb cut permit and install a parking pad in a tight spot. Lisa McNelis was patient, thorough, and provided us with the detailed and professional drawings that we needed to secure the permit. She and her team were available to talk when we ran into snags, as one often does when working with SDOT. Today our permit was officially closed out and finaled. I am thankful for being directed to McNelis Architects and having their expert help with our unusual situation.

I came to Lisa and her team with a complicated small business project, and they made it a reality. The amount of work, attention to detail, and pleasant professionalism they had, made my entire experience very enjoyable. Their plans were very thorough, and the city had no issues approving everything with ease. I’ve gone back to them for various small projects, and they have consistently helped me to their greatest extent. I highly recommend McNelis Architects!
