About Us

McClay Custom Homes is a licensed general contractor in New Bern (Craven County) NC. With over 34 years of combined experience, we have hundreds of satisfied customers from 1997 to present. Bill McClay grew up in New Bern, NC and a move back east from Raleigh, NC allowed him to start up operations and continue building quality homes here and in the River Dunes community outside of Oriental, NC. Bill prides himself on his customer attention throughout the home building process. The customer should always know what is happening with their house and feel at ease being part of the process. Two other keys to Bill's home building philosophy are quality built homes and energy efficiency. Attention to detail and job site accountability are expected to insure quality, and construction planning and practices recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy insure energy efficient homes.

We interviewed several builders and Bill McClay took the extra effort to be sure our house plan would fit on the lot and was familiar with the list of "wants" that we supplied before the interview. We chose McClay builders because of the obvious work ethic shown, the follow-up attention, and the character displayed by the entire staff. The caring shown to us as individuals during the whole process made it a pleasure even though we were living in Africa during the first months of construction. Bill helped us modify an existing plan to satisfy our wants and needs. His final estimate was within 3 1/2 % of the final cost...amazing! Our home is high quality and beautiful...thanks to McClay Custom Homes! (Our house is the one shown in his ad.)

As a sub-contractor it is refreshing to work with Bill & Patty who involve their customer in every aspect of the building / renovation process. Many builders see me only after they have spoken with their customer to get an "idea" as to what they may want and then try to "squeeze" the job into the existing budget that doesn't always reflect what the customer was envisioning for a finished product. I have worked with both of them on many projects and they never waiver on the intent to deliver the customers wants. I am proud to enter into any job with them.

McClay Custom Homes built a dormer and second story bedroom addition. Our home had a large unused attic space which we wanted to convert into an additional bedroom. We chose McClay Custom Homes due to their professionalism. McClay Custom Homes is a very responsive, professional company to work with. Bill McClay takes great pride in the work his employees perform and it is evident in the quality of the workmanship. Working with Bill has been by far the most pleasant and worry free experience we have had on a project. I highly recommend McClay Custom Homes for anyone that wants the job done on time, on budget, and right the first time. We have no reservations about using them for future projects.

Bill did some minor kitchen remodeling for us, which involved re-working some existing cabinets, framing in some new appliances and moving/replacing some countertops. Everything turned out very well. The finished product fit in very well with the current set up of the kitchen. Bill was great to work with and addressed all questions or concerns as they arose.
