Hodgins et Associés - Architectes paysagistes

Our inner city landscape project faced many constraints and challenges. We have a large space by inner city standards (but small relative to suburban spaces), yet the space is awkwardly situated between two structures, heavily shaded in most areas, with a few small sections in full sun just outside of the "cone of shade" from the neighbouring building. The heavy shade and extensive invasive roots from a large tree were also a challenge. Optimal circulation routes for people and conveniently located dedicated bicycle storage were additional requirements that we asked associate architect Tracey to address. We also asked for a space that would be subdivided into room-like areas for dining and sitting. Also, we asked for consideration of sight lines from interior spaces, and use of materials for hardscaping areas that would echo some of our interiors. This all had to be accomplished within a jurisdiction known for its strict enforcement of what some would consider overly picky bylaws. This project, although modest in area, required more than a computer aided sketch by a self-trained garden contractor! The process with Hodgins associes follows a professional architectural style, with an exchange of proposals, sketches and final drafts. The combination of challenges on our site were handled with imagination yet with close attention to our feedback and input at all stages. This included phases such as project planning, choice of materials, choice of planting material, handling of permits, tenders and hiring of contractors, and typical trouble shooting problems during the actual building phase. Because we had so many comments and requests along the way this project took well over one year from start to finish. In summary, our project was handled with a very high degree of professionalism. Planning was an authentic dialogue so we ended up with exactly want we expected, and administration and project management could not have been any better. We would especially recommend Hodgins associes for those projects that have specific difficulties or multiple challenges to overcome.

La devanture du commerce a été embellie de façon majeure et a permis d'adoucir la pente d'accès et d'améliorer l'accessibilité au commerce. J'ai aussi fait faire un très grand étang baignable qui est vraiment magnifique grâce aux conseils judicieux des professionnels. Leurs idées et aussi la vision à long terme qu'ils apportent ont fait vraiment une différence sur le projet. Les dollars ont été bien investis. J'ai aussi eu recours à leurs services pour améliorer l'apparence d'une résidence en campagne en planifiant l'aménagement et la construction d'un garage et de passerelles qui ont changés l'allure globale de la propriété. Ce que j'apprécie le plus c'est qu'ils ont toujours la vision à long terme en tête et non seulement le projet instantané. Le retour sur l'investissement est vraiment positif.

I knew Hodgins et Associes by reputation before I hired them as they are often featured in design magazines. Of the three landscape architects I contacted they were by far the most approachable even though my property is fairly small-- a front ground level garden measuring 25' x 14', to be transformed from lawn to perennial plants/bushes/trees, and an existing rear deck with no direct sunlight measuring 12' x 35' in need of storage and anything that would grow, both front and back requiring maximum light and privacy and low maintenance. I found Hodgins to be creative, very diplomatic in making appropriate choices, and most of all, respectful of budget. Their quote was not the cheapest submitted, but the quality of the design and the choice of plants was outstanding, and I was entirely satisfied with the work done. They were extremely pleasant and professional. They saved me a bundle when I think of what I had spent on plants that were inappropriate in the past, and three years later my garden looks wonderful.

Several years ago we purchased a home that was built in the late 1940s, whose design is best described as "Mid Century Modern". When it became time to work on the landscape, we looked for a landscape architect that was both very knowledgeable and sensitive to our desire to maintain the integrity of the design of that era so as to ensure that the house and its landscaping melded and remained true to the vision of the architect who built the home. Over the years we have worked with Myke on many projects, which in some instances involved just tweaking some sections of the garden to other projects that involved redesigning whole sections of the garden, to planning the next phases of the landscape. Each project regardless of the size was excellently executed and the design great. Moreover, Myke is a pleasure to work with and over the years we have come to view him as a "partner" in our objective of preserving and enhancing the architecture of our home and its landscape.

Myke Hodgins and his team had a pretty daunting task in our new space in downtown Montreal. The "garden" was a grass and concrete area overlooked by three apartment buildings with multiple balconies. He and his expert team set to work and came up with a prize winning result that makes everyone gasp when they step into it. With shade, a water feature, an eating area and grey and green foliage, it is a dream come true. His associates, architects, landscapers, stone masons and lighting designers are top flight. His office responds promptly and are unfailingly courteous.

I have worked with Hodgins and Associates for more than 15 years on a wide variety of projects. Most recently we redesigned a section of the garden to create a contemporary water feature called the Aqueduct. Eric Fleury was the point person on this project and I have nothing but praise for his abilities. He worked to schedule, was always available for consultations and guided the whole process in an extremely professional manner. Our whole family is delighted with the results, and for visitors it is a big WOW! Myke Hodgins has a depth of professional knowledge that is hard to beat. Whether for a large project like the Aqueduct or for much smaller projects, I have been extremely happy with the results. Everyone in the firm is pleasant, easy to work with and able either to take full charge or to collaborate, as the project and my own needs required. I recommend them highly.
