J & J Concepts

We built with J&J Concepts and had a similar experience to many other reviewers. Terrible subs, incompetent and/or shady bookkeeping, months late to finish, problems with subs not getting paid months after you paid for their work, lots of excuses, refuse to pay for property damage, blocked emails when you object to something, poor/no communication, no actual project management (plan on *being* the proj mgr), and extremely low time commitment (days/weeks of no activity). Count on zero warranty after they get their final check, spending hours correcting their sworn statements, hiring lawyers, and having to fight to get lien waivers. Biggest warning: Fiscally unstable. Watch out for lump sum management fees that keep them comfortable with their snail's pace and leave you in a spot where you've drastically overpaid them well ahead of the finish date. They admitted in writing that they used our yet-to-be-earned lump sum payments to pay other client accounts. Warning, Will Robinson!!

I feel as though I have a relatively unique perspective in providing this review. I have experience in building and remodeling residential properties. Additionally, I had the experience of working alongside design professionals for a Fortune 500 industrial furniture company for several years. Therefore, I feel I can provide a fair and unbiased review. My husband and I interviewed builders/designers for over five years to build our house. J & J Concepts LLC., Patti and Jerry Nelson, were chosen by us because of their high quality construction, design and value. Patti Nelson and I began the design process working closely on a one to one basis over the past year. Patti is sensational in determining what a person's likes and dislikes are. She also has the unique skill of developing an overall design concept that incorporates high design, spot on color choice and spacial relationships that ultimately combine to deliver a truly custom home. Patti was always professional, she has a dogged determination to stick close to a budget. I had a tendency to go "Ivana Trump" and Patti kept me grounded. Patti is good natured and is fun to be around, she has good relationships with her suppliers, which can be key in the time-sensitive construction environment. Our house was begun in January of 2015 and finished in time for the Spring Parade of Homes beginning on May 21, 2015. The house is ADA compliant and is almost 4,000 sf. Without Patti and Jerry's ability to meet deadlines that never could have happened. Patti keep me on task and when I couldn't make a decision for whatever reason, she gently guided me to make a choice. I learned to trust her implicitly. Our house won best kitchen of the Spring Parade for our price range. It also was one of the most seen houses in the parade due to it's popularity. All great testaments to her/their skills and abilities. I would recommend Patti and Jerry to anyone building a new home or remodeling an older home. It was truly a rewarding and fun experience.

Jerry & Patti Nelson are an absolutely dynamite team and their homes are well designed and beautifully constructed. Patti has the design & decorator skills while Jerry has the background and experience in taking the design to a finished product. J & J Concepts works with experienced, and highly qualified, contractors and have high expectations on craftsmanship and quality from them. I have particularly been impressed with the way that Jerry interacts with the contractors answering their questions and ensuring that the expectations are met. These are the reasons that J & J Concepts homes regularly are awarded recognition in the Grand Rapids Parade of Homes!

They did not complete my house. Several different colors in one room. Water that flows towards my house from my deck. Two doors that have dry rot that are only two years old. They refused to complete several items, such as seal windows, finish painting kitchen, correct poor plumbing, fix poorly constructed deck, fix cracks and dropping cement. etc. etc. Overcharged. I would NOT recommend them.

Patti and Jerry were very detailed and timely. They had great patience with the design process. I would recommend them to anyone looking to build a customer home.
