As a child, our founder was going through the grocery store with her uncle. There she encountered her first rutabaga. She was mesmerized by its size, texture and color. She was in awe of this amazing new (to her) vegetable! After what seemed to be a million questions (she was that kind of child), her good-natured uncle picked up a brown produce sack and said, "You know what? Rutabagas are kind of unique. They might even come from outer space! YOU are like a rutabaga! Let's take one home for your aunt to cook for us." Later, he explained to her how rutabagas are a famine vegetable that has saved lives throughout history. She felt a connection to that unusual vegetable. Rutabagas are good for people, and they might even save lives! From that day forward, her uncle called her by her new nickname -- Rutabaga. As an adult, she would go on to do international modeling, travel the world, live, work and have her children in Japan, assist in charitable outreaches overseas, work for investment and insurance brokerages, do federal contracting for a fortune 500 engineering firm, run her own self-sustainable farm, and eventually return to school to further educate herself. She has met all kinds of adventurous, free-spirited people from all walks of life. In short, she has met other Rutabagas. People began coming to her for advice. Through consulting she found that Rutabagas, have similar lifestyle tastes and appetites. Rutabagas, no matter their budget, were looking for affordable reliable quality; the most bang for their buck! Her life experiences, as well as thrifty shopping with her aunt as a child, gave her an eye for finding quality bargains. Her eclectic treasure hunting skills were in demand.
