About Us

Stephanie Barnes-Castro is a 1982 graduate of the Environmental Studies program at the University of California, Santa Cruz 1982. Like her signature Stonehenge logo, Stephanie strives to design homes that reflect strength, beauty, longevity and a connection with the earth. The variety of designs that can be seen in her portfolio is a direct result of her ability to really listen. Stephanie takes her client's dreams and desires into account right from the beginning, even when a client comes to her without a definite direction in mind. By approaching each project without preconceived imagery, each home is uniquely it’s own and is designed to reflect the natural landscape coupled with the client's personality and lifestyle. Stephanie's goal in designing the home itself is to seamlessly tie the natural environment to the built environment by integrating light, air, proportion, scale and attention to detail in an effort to create both an aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient home.

In the 30+ years I've worked as a County planner, I've had the opportunity to review numerous residential developments as well as individual residences prepared by Stephanie Barnes-Castro. Because of consistently high quality of her work, I hired her to prepare the plans for a major remodeling of my own home. I am very pleased with the outcome and I enthusiastically recommend her to anyone seeking an outstanding professional---her designs are truly impressive.

Stephanie Barnes Castro and her professional architectural team were wonderful to work with. Stephanie made important contributions to our remodel which brought in more light, added functionally defined usable spaces, and created beautiful and cohesive architectural details throughout the interior and exterior of our home. Stephanie is an exceptional architect. She astutely combines a creative design sensibility and strong executional skills with intent listening to evolve a plan which both fits the client's desires and expands the range of the client's thinking. We were very focused on the "green" aspects of our design, and Stephanie brought deep knowledge and comprehensive research to the task. As a result, our home incorporates the latest innovations in passive solar design, energy efficiency, recycled materials and water conservation. With a project that also included sensitive coastal and planning issues, Stephanie developed a design which scaled to and blended with the natural environment, and then competently guided the project through all the approval processes. We enjoyed the design and construction process with Stephanie and love our new home. We recommend Stephanie without reservation.

Stephanie designed a beautiful, functional house for us. She did an excellent job understanding our desired style and helped us to make the necessary tradeoffs between size, placement, style, cost, and other factors. Her plans were exceptionally detailed, which helped us to obtain permits and good construction bids. We moved in on February 28, 2012, and have enjoyed every day in our new house.

Stephanie was amazing to work with because she really listened and paid attention to who we are and how we live. We knew from her previous work that she doesn’t repeat the same style in every project, and we liked her flexibility and attention to the style of each house and its environment. Throughout the project we were impressed at how carefully she listened to all of our thoughts and opinions; in several cases she took our uninformed ideas and creatively transformed them into wonderful design elements. We love our remodeled home! Stephanie’s strengths include excellent communication, consistency, focus, and follow-through. We recommend her with great enthusiasm!

Commented: dining areaIt would take a bit to extract the plans, but my guess is that the interior dimensions are larger than 14' x 14' and as large as 16' x 16'.

Commented: MirrorsIt's difficult to tell, but the ceiling is sloped so each mirror is a different height. But overall, the average would be 2' wide x 5' tall. Hope that helps.
