I do not recommend using David Smith for your project. In the past, I believe David used to do quality work with a skilled team.That’s why we selected him two and half years ago when we began our renovation project. However, he no longer has any employees and he is just trying to do poor work with unskilled subcontractors to get out of jobs. This led to our job taking years longer than needed and unprofessional work. We are also unhappy with how we were surprise billed for items that were never discussed as extra, or inaccurately billed. The project took way too long - it took from 05/2021 to 10/2023 (original estimate 4-6 months). We’d wait several weeks for a worker “to be available” only to have a very small increment of progress done and then wait again. We started to hear from his subcontractors that other projects he had were also years behind. The carpenters were all quitting so they did terrible work. It was on us to supervise the day to day quality of the work and not David (who didn’t check work or was part of the problem). For example: door with a gap so large you can fit your pinky into it and see through the gap into the other room, cut a hole in our roof and left it open for days so when it rained, it leaked inside the house, David instructed his worker to fill the 8” hole IN CINDER BLOCK with SPACKLE. One of our doors was installed with drywall screws. I observed a door handle that didn't cover the hole cut into the door and when I complained, they filled the hole with bondo putty (without removing the door knob so it smeared all over the handle). Despite repeated reminders, zip system tape was never rolled. Our contract stated that any out-of-scope items would be communicated to us in advance but instead on several occasions we were billed retroactively for things that never had been discussed as “extra”. For example David hired painters to paint walls that had to be altered per the plans and the exterior of the addition we put on. Then, after the work was complete, he stated his estimate didn’t include painting and charged us over four thousand dollars. Our final invoice included thousands of dollars of more surprise charges for carpentry and even some items that were explicitly called out on the plans and estimate (like the garage slab thickness and sheetrock thickness. We refused those.). Cheaper materials than specified on the drawings were substituted on our project without our permission. It was 100% relief rather than excitement when the project was complete. For the record, we paid every bill promptly. Are things still incorrect and need to be fixed? Yes. Would we have David try to remedy them? We can’t trust him. We were incredibly patient but there is a point where mistake after mistake, delay after delay, surprise charge after surprise charge, is unforgivable and you feel taken advantage of.

We hired Smith Building Group to do our first major home renovation and they were absolutely amazing every step of the way. From helping to visualize our ideas to bringing them to life, everything was so thoughtful and organized. There was constant communication throughout the entire process. I highly recommend them.

There are not enough good things I can say about Smith Building Group. David Smith gutted our 1950's master bathroom and left us with a dream master bathroom. From the very first meeting he walked us through every step and continued to communicate , update and pretty much stay by our side through every step. His team of plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters and tile installers were all exceptional, polite and a pleasure to have around. We had such a good experience that we immediately hired David to build a new back deck for us, which also came out amazing.

David and his team did a remarkable job with my bathroom renovation: it looks exactly as I had envisioned and I couldn't be more pleased. The quality of the workmanship, the daily updates, and the 'extra' accommodations I requested (e.g. hitting the door with another coat of varnish, doing some extra spackling, finding the perfect stone for the shower curb) - all exceeded my expectations. Scheduling was also a critical element for me - as this was a gut renovation of my only bathroom - so keeping downtime to a minimum was essential. They coordinated the various trades so this was pretty much seamless (I don't know how they managed this, but they even had the tile guys in on Saturday and Sunday to keep on track!). A special shout out to Carolyn: she's excellent at communicating, and was able to quickly, and calmly, resolve any questions or issues that came up. All-in-all: a very professional outfit which was a pleasure to work with (which many folks have told me is very rare when dealing with contractors.) Highly recommended.

We cannot say enough about David and his team. We hired Smith Building Group to do some major work on the house we just bought. We originally contacted him because of all the great reviews we read about him. It was our first time working with a contractor; so didn't know what to expect. He exceeded our expectations in every way! David is very detail oriented, really cares about listening to clients' needs and going above and beyond to deliver. He is super responsive, and will never leave you hanging for answers or progress updates. His project manager Carolyn sends daily updates on all the work that's been done for the day as well as what's planned in the upcoming days. We really appreciated that touch. David is on site every day, checking on the progress, making sure every detail is being addressed and that things go smoothly and according to plan. His entire team of workers is super nice, professional and truly talented. Everyone from the carpenter, to plumber, to electrician could not be more impressive and skilled. They have truly transformed our house. Some of the work that we had done included removing of load bearing walls, kitchen remodel, adding a powder room, painting walls throughout the entire house and floor re-staining. It was a lot to juggle but David had it all under control and managed the process very smoothly. We really appreciated David's honesty and professionalism and would absolutely recommend him! Owning a house is a never ending project. David is the only contractor we'll ever call on from now on. Hire him! You will not be disappointed.

David Smith, Patrick McCarthy, and their team are the real deal. They were very professional, met deadlines, and were excellent about keeping in daily communication with us. From the early planning stages to the final product, their expertise and guidance were invaluable. Home renovation is always stressful, but knowing we had such competent and experienced craftsmen on the job was great comfort. Smith Building won't be your cheapest option, but you will be paying for top-notch workmanship!

We purchased our home about a year and a half ago, and after living with 1.5 baths, decided we needed a change. Not only did we need to update our seriously out dated bathroom (circa 1970), but we wanted to add an additional bathroom by taking space from the existing full bathroom and combining that with the neighboring closet. After interviewing several contractors recommended by friends and people we had worked with previously, we were disappointed. It felt like they weren't being up front with us, or in one situation the contractor spoke down to me on a number of occasions, saying my husband should be the one to set up the project. Before giving up, I came to houzz and found Smith Building. Speaking with David was fantastic. He was thorough, knowledgeable and honest. We moved forward with the project, and things went very smoothly. We had significant input in the design process, and they responded with guidance and flexibility. A few things came up throughout the process, and we were provided with a number of options, including what we likely should do or what we could do for less without jeopardizing the safety and well being of our home, empowering us to make the right decision that worked for us. To say we are thrilled with the outcome is an understatement. I can't recommend Smith Building enough. The project was completed on time, and the outcome is exactly what we wanted.

This is our first home and therefore also our first remodel. From start to finish Smith Building Group was amazing. They were responsive, understanding of our budget and got the job done in record time. Patrick was an absolute pleasure to work with and we will absolutely be hiring them again for future jobs.

Smith Building Group rebuilt my entire home, inside and out and the end result is spectacular. We receive compliments from people, both visitors inside and complete strangers just walking by. They were truly a pleasure to work with and listened to us, delivering our entire wish list. I can't say enough about how professional they were and highly recommend them!!

David and Patrick were wonderful to work with after having moved into a new home this summer and needing some major work done. I highly recommend them and will be using them again when we are ready to do more renovations in the future.

I had a great experience hiring Smith Building Group to rectify issues (leakage) caused from a poor renovation job that was done by another contractor two years ago. To summarize, David Smith the owner is a very knowledgeable contractor, who provides constant communication throughout the process. The price is reasonable and there were no surprise add-on fees at the end. He also identified additional issues from the previous renovation job that could lead to potential disaster down the road. I was also very impressed with the work his team had done, from start to finish with a meticulous clean up. After having so many bad experiences with several general contractors in the past, I would definitely keep in touch with Smith Building Group for all my renovation needs in the future.

We were very happy with the renovations to our kitchen and baths done by the Smith Building Group. They have excellent design sense. They had great ideas for features we hadn't even thought of such as a kitchen desk and a window seat. We use both all the time. The team at Smith Building Group was very responsive when we had questions. We are so pleased with our kitchen that we don't ever want to move!
