About Us

West Workshop is an award-winning architecture and design studio founded in 2017 by architect Kurt West with offices in Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC. The firm’s design practice operates in the field of contemporary design across a spectrum of scales, from commissioned architectural projects, interiors, custom furniture and public artworks. Born into a military family, Kurt grew up throughout the U.S. and Germany, but he considers himself as much a Texan as he is a Hoosier. He received a Bachelors in Architecture from Ball State University and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Virginia with a Masters in Architecture. Prior to launching West Workshop, Kurt apprenticed at Morphosis Architects in Los Angeles in addition to stops in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Washington, DC. Kurt is married with 3 children, an avid baseball fan and licensed to practice architecture in Virginia, North Carolina and Washington, DC.

Kurt did an incredible job rearranging some space to create two beautiful and perfectly laid out bathrooms in my small home. From concepts to construction drawings and problem solving issues with my early 1900s home he knew exactly what to do and always had the right advice at the right time. And I've got him working on a massive kitchen renovation and a large addition to a second home. Hire West Workshop today!

My wife and I are incredibly happy with our new porch, designed by the talented and professional Kurt West. It was a modest project as far as home remodeling projects go, but Kurt still gave us his full and undivided attention, which meant a lot to us. He patiently answered and provided a quick response to our (many!) questions about the design and construction process, personally visited with us on multiple occasions to go over draft designs and flooring/roofing/coloring samples, and was extremely helpful in working with our structural engineer and construction contractor (since we had some foundation and drainage issues that were also being repaired). His design advice, based on his many years of experience, was superb, and he actually ended up saving us tens of thousands of dollars based on his input on our concurrent foundation/drainage project. Kurt is a true artist, and a really nice guy as well. He did an amazing job for us, and we can’t wait to work with him again on our next remodeling project. Thank you, Kurt!

Kurt did the drawings for finishing our basement. He was able to take our basic idea and turn it into permit-ready plans. Kurt worked really well with our contractor, but more importantly he worked well with us. He’s a good listener and dependable. We would gladly hire him all over again.

We hired Kurt to design, build, and install a entertainment center/shelving unit that would span the length of one of our living room walls. We had somewhat of a vision in mind, but it was not until Kurt got involved that the project really came to life. He worked through the design process with us and his creativity and patience were greatly appreciated (and necessary!). His eye for detail was amazing and his work was impeccable. The finished product was more than we had ever hoped for - and instead of just being a practical piece it really became a design element and a focal point of the room. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Kurt - his personality and artistic vision are assets that make him someone we would hire time and time again.
