Regardless of whether you’re picking up a rolling pin for the first time or thinking of applying to the Great British Bake Off, every home needs a hearty collection of bakeware. After all, we wouldn't be able to make our favourite cupcakes, biscuits or bread without baking trays, cake pans, and other bakeware supplies. One of the easiest ways to accumulate a good collection is by purchasing a bakeware set, and once you've mastered the basics you can specialise — go for those ramekins, bundt pans and cake batter dispensers.

For those just starting to stock their kitchen (or for those looking for a refresh), here are a few things to consider:

What bakeware do I need?

Bakeware can come in individually or in a set, and what you decide to go for will depend on your baking needs, preferences and expertise. Every good set should include one or two cake tins, as well as a muffin tin, loaf pan and casserole dish. These pieces often come in ceramic, silicone, steel, glass and aluminium finishes, though other even more specialist materials can always be found.

What specialty bakeware is the best?

If you frequently bake then you'll need to go beyond the basics. Pie dishes, cupcake tins, and cookie cutters make desserts a breeze, while loaf tins and muffin trays are ideal for those breakfast treats. If you frequently make cakes, it's probably worth investing in multiple baking tins, cake decorating sets and piping tools.

Can silicone bakeware go in the microwave and oven?

Silicone bakeware is non-stick and durable, making it a very popular option for many bakers. It is microwave-, dishwasher- and freezer-safe and can go in the oven at temperatures up to 220C.
