Bunk Beds

Bunk beds are not only a great way to optimise space and storage, but children love them! Regardless of whether you’re searching for bunk beds for kids, teenagers or for adults, take a look at the following tips to help find the perfect bunk bed for your home.

How high do ceilings have to be for bunk beds?

You’ll probably find that most bunk beds are between 5ft and 6ft in height, with bunk beds for young children being slightly shorter and bunk beds for older children, teens and adults being slightly taller. As a general rule of thumb you should leave at least 2ft between the top bunk and the ceiling so that the occupant doesn’t bump their head when they sit up. Therefore, if you buy a 5ft bunk bed your ceiling should be at least 7ft high, for a 6ft bunk bed your ceiling should be 8ft high and so on.

Are bunk beds safe?

Yes, bunk beds are perfectly safe providing all the safety checks are in place. When purchasing a bunk bed make sure that they come with guardrails, headboards and footboards, and these should be kept in place even when the bed is pushed against a wall. Mattresses for the top bunk should be no thicker than 17cm and you should avoid placing your bunk beds close to the window or within 2 metres of a light fitting. Current guidelines recommend that children under the age of 6 do not sleep on the top bunk, and that parents discourage their children from playing on their bunk beds. Many manufacturers now include added safety features such as glow in the dark ladders, extra safety rails and will provide specific mattresses for bunk beds for kids – great news for cautious parents!

What style bunk bed should I get?

This depends on a variety of different factors; who will be using the bunk bed, the space you have available and personal preference. There are a number of different bunk bed options depending on how many people will be sleeping in them. A regular bunk bed sleeps two people, a triple bunk bed sleeps three and a double bunk bed sleeps four. However, there’s no need to rule out a bunk bed as a bed option for a single person as the bottom bunk can be used for guests or as a comfy sofa when not in use. Bunk beds with storage are a fantastic option for bedrooms which are lacking in space and include handy space-saving features such as drawers and storage shelves. For uniquely shaped rooms why not consider a corner bunk bed, also known as an L-shaped bunk bed, to maximise space. We have a selection of regular bunk beds, triple bunk beds and double bunk beds with wood, painted wood and metal frames, so you’ll be sure to find one that matches your bedroom design.
